i really want (NEED) a car around ages 16-18 is when i plan to buy. but i know it is alot and have already started saving when i realized i needed a goal! So i am stuck between thee:

Honda Civic:

Which starts at: $15, 505

~~~~~~~~~OR~~~~~~~~
VW Beetle:
$18, 290
Now I live in a small beach town, and am leaning towards the beetle because it goes farther gas wise, smaller, easier to drive (been told), less mantaince.
Of course i will buy it used!
I'd go with a used version of either of those cars. They'll be cheaper that way. And as for the VW, you'd hardly be able to tell the difference because they haven't changed the design in years.
The question is, are you looking for a long term car, or a short term car? If you want a long term car go with a car that you can see your self driving for 5+ years. If you are getting a car when you are 16, think about what kind of car you are going to want in college, after high school, whatever you plan on doing you know??
If it is short term, go with the car that fits your personality/needs right now more. When I was car shopping I knew I wanted something that would hopefully last me 10 years + and I drove it into the ground. I got a simple car that would not go out of style, and be able to last a long time.
Based on personal prefrence, I would suggest trying to find a used 95-99 Eclipse. It will have a bit of miles on it, but its WAY sporty, a good quality vehicle, and cheap (Think 10k for a practicually new one). Plus they are SUPER tunable for those of us that like the modification stand point (Like me!)
I want a VW beetle, but I probably won't get one any time soon, I have a 10 yr old family car right now.
I think the Honda Fit is a sweet car, too.
I wouldn't go for anything new. I'd go for something used and cheap, but will run okay and you'll feel safe in. Are you thinking that you'll pay for it all yourself, because you'll need a job. Plus the cost of insurance and gas. & at the time you'll be buying, it will be college time, so that takes up a HUGE chunk of your (or your parents) money and you don't want to be making big car payments.
Get something practical. You don't have the leisure of paying attention to vanity right now, wait for that until you have a stable job.
I drive a beetle. We bought it new in 2002 but I didn't drive it until 2005 (this was to make insurance cheaper when I started driving plus we sold our VW passat station wagon). It drives really well and the front of it is really roomy. The back is small though. If you are getting a coupe civic, neither of them are really going to be practical for when you are a lot older. But VWs are foreign and the parts are more expensive, I'm sure more expensive than the Japanese parts would be. If you have to get anything fixed it can take longer as well because the parts aren't as easily available. If you have any other questions, feel free to pm me about them.
Also, I would definitely look into how much insurance is going to run you on brand new versions of those cars. The beetle's design didn't change a lot until a couple of years ago and the only design from the early ones to the second design was in the headrests really (older ones had holes in the headrests, mine don't though). I'd get a used one if you're going to get it as a brand new driver, at least a couple years old. Insurance will be less.
thanks everyone! that was helpful! my moms car she bought a couple months after i was born, so it is 14 almost 15 years old. it works nice but it breaks down easily had is high matnince. i will drive that car for a while and she is getting a new one.
Thats a good idea. Because if you were to get into an accident with a new car, your insurance would go super high!
I'd try going for a used car.
I really want a bug but right now i can't afford it.
By the time i get my license it will be June and i may have almost $4000 saved. I'm thinking about getting a used civic like a 96 or something...Its old but they still run well and it will have a cd player instead of a cassette. :rotfl2:
Mm, getting a new car is not the best idea.
Go back a few years. 15,000 is kind of steep for someone who is only beginning to drive.
I'd aim for a 2003, or a 2004.
My mum drives a 2002 Chevy, and it has no air, no powerlocks.. it's pretty bad and doesn't run too smoothly and it's only about worth 4k.
Personally, I'm driving a '92 Buick with two missing hubcaps and a broken gas meter, and that's perfect for me right now.
When you've just gotten your license, you shouldn't have to worry about a new car. Merve (that's my car's name :upsidedow) is great for me right now, and really practical.
Instead of wasting money on a new car, I'm saving for college instead.
My dad owns a car dealership so i got my car for free
all i have to pay for is gas and insurance......
i have a 2007 Ford Escape (mint green)
i think its a 20,000 car but im not sure
good luck with getting a car:thumbsup2
I'm guessing I'll get my mom's car. It's a 2007 Hyundai Accent. It's really cute and in super good condition. Very few miles.
It doesn't have power locks/windows though, which is annoying. But I won't be picky. I'm getting a better car than most kids and I won't have to pay much for it.
I really really need a car. With college and work and everything, ugh. I'm tired of people driving me everywhere.
I'm having the same problem right now as well...
It's just SO hard to get hottness and style plus cheapness in price, gas, and insurance.
I was just so mad the other day..... Friday this girl I know comes to school, "LOOK AT MY NEW CAR!!!! "
Yeah, long story short, it's a beautiful 2009 loaded Mustang and the kicker is
THE GIRL DOESN'T EVEN HAVE HER PERMIT YETTTT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:faint: :headache:
Honestly, it doesn't matter at all.
My guy friend got a brand new Mustang, too. But he's cool and doesn't boast about it.
Regardless, the mileage and insurance for it is crazy expensive.
And now he has to work about double the amount of time I do to pay for it.
Style is superficial. If a car runs and is safe, it's a good choice.
I'd say save enough for the more expensive car, or the most expensive car you would want. That way, when you actually start test driving cars, you'll have some leeway.
Also, you might want to think about the future. If you're going to college in a city, (or are just moving to a city), is a car really necessary? If your town has a lot of public transportation, can you live without a car? Or, can you walk? A lot of colleges, especially in cities, don't even allow freshmen to have cars. My brother is thinking about several colleges in a couple cities, and none of them allow freshmen to have cars.
OMG im so happy!!!!! today my mom got a new car!!!! and in 3 1/2 years that car will be .. MINE!!!!!!! its a gorgeous blue-purple, shiny, medium suv!!!!!!! i love it!!!!! and it has a remote car starter!!!!! omg best day of my life well one of the best days
haha, okay. I swear to gosh I would not lie to any of you.
I'm being truthful, you don't have to belive me, but this is the brand-new
car that my dad bought for me when I turn sixteen. I've always wanted this
car, and this is the same exact color & everything. I love this car. But I have 1 year until I can start driving it so, we only drive it on cruises right now.
yeahh, my dad got it all souped up. I like my car. That's all I wanted.
