Best company for adding the new 16 year old driver to the car insurance? He might have to find a new mom if he ever wants to drive. OMG...the rates are crazy!!!!

We have been very satisfied with Geico. They beat our old company's rate by 50% several years ago and are still considerably cheaper.

Not to be mean, but I am, does he need his license at 16? I refuse to allow mine to get his until he's 18, working and can pay for all that stuff himself.

My family uses State Farm. My now-19 yo son is on it too. It wasn't that expensive, but we have all older paid off cars and DS took driving school and State Farm's Steer Clear program.

We have AAA. Even with their rates being the least expensive, it still wasn't cheap. Our car insurance doubled when we added DS (and he was 17.5 when he got his license).

Plenty of kids are working at 16 and yes, they need a license.

To the OP, to try to continue to answer your question....

Geico is good, as another has stated. We're with a small local co. now but used Geico in the past; good rates. I would also try Progressive - we weren't using them at the time our son started driving, but were happy with their rates (and customer service!) when we did have them. Shop around....it isn't going to be "cheap" anywhere, but do your homework and see what the best deal is!

Oh, and good luck!!....

State Farm...both of our teenager's rates were reasonable. We took advantage of the steer clear driving discount and the good student discount. The discounts knocked off quite a bit. Our teens also drive older cars that are cheaper to insure. Don't add things that you really don't need, such as rental insurance. Car rentals companies will not allow your teen to drive the rental anyway...drivers must be 25.

Just curious, but do you need to ADD a child to your insurance? My DD 17 won't be getting hers for at least another year.

If I let a friend or my mom(who sometimes borrows my car) drive it I don't need them on my insurance, so why would I have to add my DD to my car if she only drives occasionally and has my permission.

My company requires that all liscensed drivers in the household be covered.

Insurance laws vary by state, and of course companies also have variations, within the laws of course! Is your child licensed or on a permit? Here in NJ when my son was on his permit I did not need to add him to the policy. He only had to be added once he was licensed. That said, there were wide differences in the amounts various companies charged for adding a child within the state. Some depends on the vehicle, how the compny assigns household drivers to vehicles, etc. One other thing is some companies were going to charge a lot more if you were coming over to them with a newly licensed driver, at least for the first three years. So I definitely would recommend calling around and seeing what companies in your state are offering when a newly licensed driver is in the mix.

Are you not planning on adding him to your existing insurance policy? That's what we did. We had two teen drivers and a new car added at the same time. Our rate tripled, but that was pretty much expected. It was good to work with an agent we already knew. As the above poster mentioned, they worked on finding the best way to assign vehicles to each driver to make the rate better.

dislal- In NC, you have to have proof of insurance before you can get your license, even at age 16.

When we added our first young driver we checked with all the companies out there. By far the best rate we got was from Farm Bureau.

Not sure if you have Farm Bureau Insurance near you, but, I would suggest checking them out if you do!

I second Farm Bureau. We have been with Farm Bureau for a while but thought we would check other companies but they couldnt come close.

You don't have to have the friend or your mom on your insurance b/c they have their own insurance. Your daughter does not. As someone said earlier, proof of insurance is a requirement for even getting a license in North Carolina, and I bet we're not the only state.

The last child we added cost $1,600 per year.

If there are more drivers than cars on your policy, he will be rated on the highest rated auto you have, regardless of whether he ever drives it. If you do not add him to your policy and he has an accident, your company will cover you for the claim, and then add him to your policy, back dating it to when he got his license and charging you for all of that back premium. Your policy may also be flagged for non renewal for your attempt to evade proper rating.

agree
and they added ours as a driver within the household. No car assigned to him, the rate is VERY mu8ch lower this way. And at 18 can take the driver class to further lower rate.
Be sure child is added to household, not assigned to a car....its a HUGE difference, for us over 1k diff.
and geico did this without our prompting, and no he does not have own car, I own it, register all cars and insure all cars.....4 cars 3 adult drivers......

By law, all drivers in your household need to be added...but see other comments regarding assigned cars versus being in household.....

One way to save a lot is to insue them on a car with liability insurance only. Our middle son was added on one car only. We had only liability insurance on it because it was old and not worth much. He (or we, don't recall) had to sign an agreement that he would drive only that one car except in certain emergency type situations. Once when it broke down, it was no problem for him to drive a different one for a couple of weeks, but I did call to clear it with the insurance company first.

We made both our sons wait until age 18 to get their licenses. As mentioned above, they could have a learners permit without being on the insurance, so we gave them lots of supervised driving practice before they were out on their own. It was a pain driving them to work and everywhere else, but we did it. When DS18 was adding in January, our insurance went up more than $150 a month. We use Farm Bureau for all our insurance policies.

In TX all drivers in household must be on our policy.
When our son went away to college we got a huge reduction in cost, he did not bring a car with him and was over 100 miles away.

At the time Geico did not offer this discount.

Just thought I'd add the info, it was something I had never heard of.
