Car insurance

The last child we added cost $1,600 per year.

I would happily pay $1600 per year. Here in NJ the average for a new driver (at least in my area - Philly burbs) is $2500. Just for the 17 year old.

My car insurance is slowly approaching $6K per year. DH has a truck that is paid off, DS17 drives an old POS & I drive a small SUV. Nothing extravagant. And in 2 more years, our younger son will be driving too. :faint:

Our insurance gives a good student discount of 20% plus we get a discount for having home owners with them as well. As long as we keep 2 cars with the teen driver the rate isn't bad, but goes up a lot if they have their own car. DD is almost 17 and really isn't pushing getting her license yet. Since she doesn't work, I feel more comfortable driving them around. 2 of her friends have already had accidents.

We were successful in excluding my daughter on the policies of the cars that she would not be driving and insuring her only on one vehicle.

Like a nut, I did not take collision on her first vehicle (only liability), even though it was an older model and she promptly totaled it within her first week of driving it. We were out not only the money to fix it, but she was dropped by State Farm and had to go to a separate company and paid over $300 a month for her insurance .....and that was back in 1991!

My family uses State Farm. My now-19 yo son is on it too. It wasn't that expensive, but we have all older paid off cars and DS took driving school and State Farm's Steer Clear program.

We also have State Farm. Good grades also cut rates at SF. With good grades and having taken their Steer Clear program, insurance for DD was cut in half....still expensive, but 50% off is better than nothing.:)

If there are more drivers than cars on your policy, he will be rated on the highest rated auto you have, regardless of whether he ever drives it. If you do not add him to your policy and he has an accident, your company will cover you for the claim, and then add him to your policy, back dating it to when he got his license and charging you for all of that back premium. Your policy may also be flagged for non renewal for your attempt to evade proper rating.

I'm not sure where you are located AND it has been a few years since I worked in the field but it used to be the opposite of how you posted (at least here and the east coast states we serviced)....
if you had MORE CARS than drivers, they would get rated on the most expensive vehicle regardless of which one they 'normally' use. Now some states will allow a driver exclusion waiver stating that you agree for the premium adjustment that the excluded driver will NOT drive said vehicle and if they do, there is NO ins coverage!! and the ins company means it, and it will hold up in a court of law. but not many states do this.....

I called to find out how much to add my oldest DS to ours; with our current discounts plus his driver's ed and good student discount they quoted me $900/year. He still hasn't gotten his driver's license because he doesn't feel confident driving by himself yet which is fine by me! I don't want him on the road alone until he feels ready to tackle it.

That quote was with Amica, btw.
