Car hire without a credit card

We have a car hire included in our package from the travel agent. It's fully inclusive but as we don't have a credit/debit card to use at pick up at Sandford we usually get get charged a couple of hundred $ when we pick up. Does anyone know what the charges are like at the mo?

I used to get the platinum package which included a tank of full as we dont have a credit card and never got charged a fee.

That being said last year we gave them our visa debit card from natwest as it was a enw rental company that we had not used before

So if you have a debit card with the visa sign you can use thar

How can they warrant a charge like that, where is it going? I know you may have an imprint on the card but never heard of being charged and will be making a scene if they try that with me.

The OP is saying they don't have a card to imprint. With some companies if you don't pay a security deposit of $200 you don't get the car. There is also a problem for some returning the car they get refunded by $US cheque, they won't give cash back at the end of the rental. Then costs UK travellers a bank fee to convert.
The easiest way is use a credit card, even if you don't use for anything else use it for car security, its the easiest option.

We have given a deposit in the past, and then normally a charge of about $100 for upgrading the car to a convertible. I think last time we paid about $300 total. We just budget for it in our travel planning. We don't like to use a credit card so we don't use one - I guess we can't complain as in the uk it's almost impossible to get a car without a card
