Car Hire Insurance

Have just booked for Oct 06 and the Virgin member of staff on the phone mentioned that i would get a free upgraded car when i join the Frequent Virgin club. This would alter my insurance and be about 25 quid more expensive. I have had free upgrades of vehicles when i have arrived at the airport but never gave it a thought about the insurance - were we driving under insured or is this a new thing? or is it a new con?

Hi,
If your hire company upgrades your vehicle (usually because they don't have any vehicles of the catergory you booked) then they cover any additional costs as this is not your fault or request. I have known them to try to get me to pay extra for an upgrade and when I decline and go to collect the car I have got the upgrade anyway.

This happens to me more times than not. We normally book an economy grade car (just the two of us travelling), and in the seven times we've been to Orlando we were given an intermediate grade car on four ot five occasions. It's also happened elsewhere in the US when we're rented. I guess they only have a certain number of small cars, and when these are all out you get given something a bit bigger. This August we were travelling with friends who had also booked an economy grade car: they were given a PT Cruiser, we had a Ford Taurus.

we went with virgin last sept and paid for the insurance over there as we always had but were ripped off big time so look into it carefully before you go.
