Car Hire - drop off different states?

Hi

We were looking to do a west coast trip this sept and were hoping to fly into Seattle and then drive down to Anaheim. Car hire if we are picking up the car in San Fran and dropping off in LA is only £10 more, however, it literally doubles the second we want to drop off in a different state. Is there anywhere we can book car hire without being penalised so much?

Shop around, I've hired in Vegas (Nevada) & dropped off at LAX (California) a few times & never been charged double.
