Car died, what next? [update: bought a new one]

My in laws have a jetta TDI and the only thing they like about it is the fuel milage. It has had nothing but problems since they bought it. They have a nephew that works at one of the local dealerships and he was saying the Jettas the TDi specifically from 2000 to 2002 are very problematic. Most things have been covered by warranty but once that ran out it has been very costly to maintain and repair.

mbb, thanks for the information. I am looking forward to rent either a Toyota Matrix or Pontiac Vibe. Does anyone know which car rental company carries them?

Sorry snoopyandpooh ... didn't have any time last week to be on the Boards. I rented the Matrix through Letz -- the guy was telling me that most of their vehicles now are Toyota's (at least here in London). I have another friend that has a Vibe and he loves it. I loved the Matrix... when I called about my van, I told them at the dealership to make sure they take AS MUCH TIME as they needed to make sure it was fixed right and the paint was dry :teeth: I really hated to give that rental car back.

We were on vacation in Regina this past week (just got back earlier today) and did some scouting. We definitely like the Vibe/Matrix and are also going to have a look at the new Mazda3. Maryliz, was that the Letz down on York St that you rented the Matrix from? We need to get a rental car for a couple of weeks until we can get the new one and it would make sense to rent what we would want to take for a test drive.

A number of places are having "sales" on Monday so I may just have to check some of them out.

Mike I stopped in at Brian Finch today and they had Vibe's starting at about 19K with cruise air auto power windows and locks etc not a bad deal.

After much searching a kicking of tires, we've ordered a 2005 Vibe from Dale Downie Pontiac in London. I know one of the business managers there and got what I consider to be a good deal. 5-speed manual transmission, power, air, cruise, sunroof. We also gave the Mazda 3 and Matrix a close look, but liked the feel of the Vibe a little better. It should be ready for pickup next Thursday. All I need to do now is go to the bank and arrange for the draft.

Congrats Mike I love the vibe but Lisa says it is to small for our family of 5. SO for us it will be either a Malibu Maxx or the Chevy Equinox or the GMC version due out early 06 model. We have the pleasure of getting our GM vehicles at Dealer cost on the employee purchase plan as my GF worked for GM for a very long time.

Congrats!! Give us an update once you've had it for a bit-would be interested in knowing how you like it-gas mileage etc.

Mike you will love your Vibe it is a blast to drive. I want to pick up the GT version with the hopped up 1.8l I4 at 185HP and 17" wheels and a 6 speed tranny.

Congrats Mike on the new car! I think you will really like it, as my friend said his was very very close to the Matrix I had.
