Car Covers for "classic" cars...

My dad just bought himself a 1977 Chevy Corvette. He's like a kid at the candy store right now.

I want to get him a car cover for his birthday. One suited for outside parking (while it will be stored most of the time, I know he'll keep out several days at a time in the summer). I've googled but the results are overwhelming. E-bay is by the far the cheapest, but I want something of quality, and don't know what I'm getting.

Any suggestions on good car covers, companies, or websites that recommend that sort of thing?

I've bought 2 covers from Big Sky Car Covers 800-221-4875 or www[dot]bigskycarcovers[dot]com (sorry, not enough posts to add a link)

If you call them, they're very helpful, and can help recommend the right cover for him. When I bought my last one, we talked about winds, etc. since I leave my covered car outside, and they recommended adding grommets on the inside of the tires for extra tie-downs to prevent the cover from creeping up when the wind blows. The cover was also less expensive (on sale) when I called them.

If I recall correctly, I got a "Weathershield HD" cover, which keeps the car clean and dry. The first cover I bought from them lasted about 10 years outdoors and I think was a "noah" fabric. The original cover had started to break down and was leaving a dust on the car....

Best of luck :-)

You can find them on ebay, but I would recommend getting them elsewhere I had bad luck with the first 2 I got on ebay, they were fakes and didnt quite fit.

Just keep in mind that the car should be completely cleaned before you put the cover on it. If you cover it with dirt/sand on it the finish of the car can get really scratched up. We have a 1987 roadster and DH won't use a car cover for that reason. We keep it in the garage with a silk parachute over it on a pully system (DH rigged it up). The parachute keeps the dust off it, but doesn't touch it.

Congrats to your dad! We have an old Stingray and bought a cover for it as well. One thing we learned: Don't buy cheap! When you do, mildew will build up on the car's finish and can destroy the paint! We finally removed our cover and just parked the car in a garage. Where we live (FL) has so much humidity that even with a better cover there was still a problem. If your dad lives in a dry area, he may not experience so much trouble. Even then, it's a *great* idea to remove the cover occasionally to check the car's finish and be sure it's dry.
