Car bomb found in Times Square: Update - Suspect arrested!!!

Thank you.....! ;)

and yes, i do think it's funny. wether it's the police that thought they would do this because of a tv show like south park, or if any person would be so offended by a show like south park to bomb times square. either way, i find humor in the south park link, sorry!

Good for you, I guess.

Jihad Jane was offended enough she was going to Sweden to kill a cartoonist. And she is just one of many terrorists that take their religion seriously. Go figure.

Crazy people will do things for crazy reasons. Like getting upset enough over a show to blow up other people.

Never, ever underestimate what an extremist is willing to do.

Yes, they constantly target NYC. It's always NYC. :furious: The Mayor blows it off by saying terrorists go after symbols, and internationally, NYC represents freedom & all the great things about the U.S. so they will be coming after us here. But, dang! Leave my city alone!
It's also a way to get the message out to the greatest amount of people. The news is more likely to pick up a story about a bombing in NYC rather than a story of a bombing in say, Seymour, IN.

I don't understand the snit you seem to be in.

I don't think the police or law enforcement are funny or stupid for making a possible connection to South Park. I thought the same thing myself, but frankly I expected it would happen AT South Park Studios or at Matt or Trey's actual homes. I tend to think MizTink feels the same.

I DO think it beyond stupid that the terrorists are so bent out of shape over a cartoon that they would take such action in retaliation. But, like you said, they don't call 'em extremists for nothing! :thumbsup2

And to be honest, I haven't heard this "possible connection" mentioned in the news. But to be fair, I usually only watch the Today Show, my local channel in NC and occassionally CNN.

That's funny. I don't understand the "snit" you think I'm in. Honestly, I haven't used any "tone" or sarcasm. I was merely stating another point of view.

Do a metasearch.

A terrorist might want to damage the place that airs the stuff that offends them. I don't know, but I would imagine it's a possibility. They said it was near it. I don't know how close.

Well at least we can all agree that it's a good thing they have the guy.

The car was parked very close to Viacom's building. Viacom owns Comedy Central, which of course is the home to South Park.

I think some of us are going to have to agree to disagree on this one.

If he was acting on his own, then I'll give you the possibility of it being tied to South Park. We've seen numerous nuts with their own agenda do crazy things. However, if this was a Taliban sponsored act, I think the South Park connection is completely implausible.

:hippie: Certainly.

I'm open to all of the possibilities. It will be interesting to see what they find.

Let's see: Gen X Pakistani gets rushed through bomb school in Pakistan, which results in "amateur," failed bomb in Times Square.

Before that, Gen Y fellow from Nigeria screws up his "underwear bomb" and fails to bring down the Northwest flight he is on.

And before that, group of thirty-something al-Qaeda types in NYC who were planning to bomb the subway system there get caught before they even begin to construct the bombs.

The good news: the terrorists attempting to get us here are -- to date at least -- clearly not rocket scientists.

The bad news: they keep coming and given the law of averages, at some point one of them who is smarter (and/or luckier) will succeed.

By the way, the mayor of NYC should apologize for engaging in "classification" before having the facts. Then again, Bloomberg looks so foolish today it really doesn't matter anymore.

2. Last year, my friend, Jane, went into her shed. As she turned on the light, a spark-just the spark from turning on the light cause a propane tank to blow. She received 3rd degree burns on her legs and 2nd degree burns over much of the rest of her body. She pulled through after months of tortuous physical therapy and debridement.

... :scared1: sheesh, I sure hope she is ok, or getting better now...

Blame South Park????
:lmao:

Blame CANADA!

Also, the South Park studios are in Culver City, California.

Comedy Central, however is in NY.

Most importantly...SUSPECT NOW IN CUSTODY! http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100504/ap_on_re_us/us_times_square_car_bomb

Terrorists are not known for their brilliance just their hatred. The reason they might bomb NYC is that it's financial center of the country. Taking out 1 studio or a couple of people won't make as large an impact on The Great Satan.

I have heard the connection made between the SP cartoon and the planted bomb on CNN.

They also put out an assassination order on Salmon Rushdie because of his book. They don't care if their reasons making sense to us.

Yes, one of the FBI/Bomb experts said there was very likely a chance that because the bomb stuff was so badly put together, as the guy was driving down our streets, he fell into one of our HUMONGOUS potholes and it prematurely set the bomb activation part going. Hence, it started smoking, and the SUV was just ditched at the side of the street, engine running, with the hazard lights on. Oops! :lmao:

On the other hand, he did park on one of the busiest streets. (**See below.) He parked directly below The Lion King theatre. (Minskoff Theatre.) There are 5 other theatres on that block. If the clocks for the bomb were set to go off at 7:30, instead of the vendor finding the car at 6:30, there would have been hundreds of people in front of the 6 theatres on 45th St., as well as all the people sitting in the pedestrian park at Times Square, in the line of the blast. The bomb experts say, if the type of bomb the bomb guy wanted to put together had been done right, the explosion would have reverberated about 800 ft out in all directions.

(** I was originally confused in the OP about which side block of the 45th St the suspect parked on. Broadway & 7th Ave actually cross each other right there at 45th St. Half the reporters said the car was off of Broadway, the others said 7th Ave. Even police Commissioner Kelly corrected himself during the press briefing.)

An update on the street vendor: I said earlier he will probably get the Keys of the City from Mayor Bloomberg. (Don't know if that will happen.) What he DID get was a phone call from President Obama yesterday! :faint:

:dance3: :woohoo: :thumbsup2

So maybe the terrorist was actually trying to get back to Disney? :confused3

:rolleyes::rotfl:

I'm almost sorry they caught the guy. There would have been a much better chance that he would get what he deserves if he was allowed to fly back to whatever hole in the ground he crawled out of instead of being caught here where he's going to be treated better than many citizens with our Tax dollars:headache: Sometimes reality makes me sick.

I saw that. I want to go to Times Square and buy something from him.

I just read an article on CNN that stated that he was on the federal no fly list.

Here is the excerpt: FBI Deputy Director John Pistole said that Shahzad was on the federal "no fly" list, which helped Customs and Border Protection agents to arrest him.

Yet, he managed to board the plane to Dubai? :rolleyes1:rolleyes1
