On the average, how long do they last?

Car batteries have different ratings....3 yrs,4yrs, 5yrs, up to 8 yrs. It depends upon cranking amps....The expected life is usually marked right on the top of the battery itself, with holes punched out of a sticker indicating month and year of installation.
