Captain Phil has Died

I was sadden to hear the news today. He was a funny man. I hope he realized how many lives he touched indirectly.

Japanese submarine slammed two torpedoes into our side, chief. It was comin' back, from the island of Tinian to Leyte, just delivered the bomb. The Hiroshima bomb. Eleven hundred men went into the water. Vessel went down in twelve minutes. Didn't see the first crab for about a half an hour. Alaskan King. Thirteen footer. You know how you know that when you're in the water, chief? You tell by lookin' from the claws to the tail. What we didn't know... was our bomb mission had been so secret, no distress signal had been sent. Huh huh. They didn't even list us overdue for a week. Very first light, chief. The crabs come crawlin'. So we formed ourselves into tight groups. You know it's... kinda like ol' squares in battle like a, you see on a calendar, like the battle of Waterloo. And the idea was, the crab comes to the nearest man and that man, he'd start poundin' and hollerin' and screamin' and sometimes the crab would go away. Sometimes he wouldn't go away. Sometimes that crab, he looks right into you. Right into your eyes. You know the thing about a crab, he's got...lifeless eyes, black eyes, like a doll's eye. When he comes at ya, doesn't seem to be livin'. Until he pinches ya and those black eyes roll over white. And then, ah then you hear that terrible high pitch screamin' and the ocean turns red and spite of all the poundin' and the hollerin' they all come in and rip you to pieces.
Y'know by the end of that first dawn, lost a hundred men! I don't know how many crabs, maybe a thousand! I don't know how many men, they averaged six an hour. On Thursday mornin' chief, I bumped into a friend of mine, Herbie Robinson from Cleveland. Baseball player, boson's mate. I thought he was asleep, reached over to wake him up. Bobbed up and down in the water, just like a kinda top. Up ended. Well... he'd been pinched in half below the waist. Noon the fifth day, Mr. Hooper, a Lockheed Ventura saw us, he swung in low and he saw us. He's a young pilot, a lot younger than Mr. Hooper, anyway he saw us and come in low. And three hours later a big fat PBY comes down and start to pick us up. You know that was the time I was most frightened? Waitin' for my turn. I'll never put on a lifejacket again. So, eleven hundred men went in the water, three hundred and sixteen men come out, the crabs took the rest, June the 29, 1945. Anyway, we delivered the bomb.

I wonder if they were shooting the show when it happened, isn't the crab season in Jan/Feb time frame?

Yes, the reports are that he and his crew were offloading the Cornelia Marie on Friday, Jan. 29th when he first suffered the stroke.

Very sad best tio his family. I really like all or most the captains and crews. It is quite a bonding they must be quite saddened. Did it happen durring filming of the show.
I heard the boat was in port.

I heard the boat was in port.

They were off-loading (emptying the boat) on St. Paul Island, which is part of the Aleutian Islands in the Bering Sea.

I don't know if they were filming or not, but I would guess a film crew was on the boat.

I want to apologize if the title seemed harsh.

Some more information:
They released their statements one hour after he passed.
I believe Phil was rallying the day before yesterday,
but took a turn for the worse.
He passed away around 11:00 p.m. last night.

His boat is at sea right now, I believe a friend came
and took the boat & crew out for this harvest,
his sons of course stayed with him.

As people are saying, it's a hard life...

Very nice tribute to Phil Harris

That is A nice tribute the NorthWestern is giving to capt.Phil.

When ther fishing its A hard time to remain friends, very fierce competition. But these captains mourn the loss of there own kind.

Hoping that Discovery Channel does A tribute.I'm sure they will.

Very disappointed to hear this sad news this morning. Brought a tear to my eye. Capt Phil was always such a great part of a great show. My thoughts are with his family and his crew.

That's so sad. :sad1: He always reminded me of my dad, who passed the day before he turned 52. The show won't be the same without him. :sad2:

From TMZ:

TMZ has learned "Deadliest Catch" star Jake Harris is currently behind bars -- after cops say the 24-year-old got into a car crash while intoxicated late last night.

Washington State troopers have confirmed that Jake -- whose father Captain Phil Harris passed away earlier this month -- was arrested in Seattle on suspicion of DUI, hit and run, and driving with a suspended license ... all three misdemeanors.

Jake was taken to a nearby jail, where he was booked.

Bail was set at $1,500.

I don't think there's ever an excuse to drink and drive.. but this poor kid. I can't even imagine what him & his brother are going through. Hopefully he can get some help, and this will wind up being a one time 'oops'.

What a sad follow up story...I agree, no excuse but I hope like you said, it's a one time mistake that he will learn from, he's just got to be hurting so.
