Hi,

My family is doing the Western cruise - 8/2/03, and we have pre-booked Captain Marvin's stingray excursion. We're scheduled for the 2 1/2 hour excursion. Can anyone, who has done this, tell me if they liked it, how long to the "sandbar", is it "scary", and is it over your head (adult)? Any info would be appreciated!!

We just returned from our cruise and went on Captain Marvyns.
It was a little walk to their store. They were ready for us and we got on a small bus to take us to the boat. There were about 25 people. They offered us punch or water and we left. The boat went out to the first stop and we got in. It was ok, but I don't really like to snorkle with waves even though they were small. My 9 and 12 yr olds did ok though. They do have life vests. The guy that brought us had food to get more fish there. We went to 2 places and then stingray city. In most spots it was waist deep. There were small waves and I held my 9 yr old. The stingrays felt smooth as silk and it was a neat experience. Overall they did a great job. The time went by fast and the video they took looked professional. Also, they will provide snorkle and fins if needed.

Captain Marvin's is great. My husband & I don't snorkle, but we enjoyed the boat ride and just lazing in the boat while others snorkled.

The stingrays were awesome! I was a bit--no, make that a lot--scared to get in. I'm 5'3" tall, and the place where we anchored was about 4-5' deep. I would recommend wearing a life jacket so that you don't have to keep treading water when the waves hit. Our captain told us that the only part of the stingray that could hurt us was the barb. So, he said to be sure not to kick out because we might accidentally kick the barb. Again, I'm 5"3", so I really tried to keep my feet firmly on the bottom, but I did need to breathe! So, use a life jacket, don't kick out, and enjoy petting these amazing stingrays. By the way, I thought they felt a lot like my Schnauzer--kinda furry and soft.

Have a wonderful time. You won't regret it.

I have to admit I wish I had booked the DCL excursion to stingray city.

I got very seasick because the boat that takes you out really rocks and rolls. Especially while it is parked for snorkeling. I got out at the stingray sand bar and really enjoyed that segment, I noticed the DCL excrusion was a large stable catamaran.

I thind Capt. Marvins is a class operation, but I am to sea- sensative ,so I will try another next time.

We did Capt. Marvin's in June, and really liked it!! There were 9 of us on a boat for 25, so we really could relax and sit anywhere we wanted and move around. We opted for the all day excursion, which left as soon as we could get to Capt. Marvin's in the morning. (They actually had to hold the van for a few minutes for us. I had booked the excursion before we left, so they were expecting us.) They took us to several beautiful areas that were suitable for snorkeling, then to a resort area, where we were fed a lunch of BBQ chicken, potato salad, coconut bread, etc. After the cruise excursions were gone, we were taken to the stingray sandbar, where we had the stingrays to ourselves. We were warned to just try not to stand on the rays, because they would try to defend themselves. They are marvelous creatures, though. We were shown how to feed them, and my husband got a bit careless and was bitten. It didn't hurt though, just drew a bit of blood. He thought that was kind of cool. It was a wonderful experience for my two teens, also. When I got back to the boat, I could feel something funny on the inside of my arm, looked down and could see the imprint of a stingray tail. It was the coolest thing in the world!! It did end up bruising, but I loved my "wound" and wore it proudly. (Good conversation subject.) We thought it was a wonderful excursion, and would highly recommend them. They are very knowledgeable, and it's a very personal excursion. We got back to the "port" at about 2:30 PM and had time for about 45 min. of shopping. If you want to shop more, I'd recommend the half day, which is only about an hour or so shorter.

Toby -
We are on the 8/2/03 Western cruise as well and we are also going on the half-day Captain Marvin's Stingray & Snorkeling. We are two families of four. We booked Captain Marvin's because of all the great info we read on these boards. We're hoping it is good. I am a little apprehensive because I am not good on boats. I'm hoping the water is calm. See you there!

yankee....to be on the safe side...just take a Bonine and you should be fine....
