I am out of the loop. I just found out the Capt. Hans is no longer with Disney. When did this happen and why?

Hi Denine! As with any employer/employee situation, the circumstances regarding Captain Hans leaving DCL are between him and DCL. Nothing official has been announced about his departure, and I believe he has been gone for a couple of months or so.

He is a fine gentleman and I'm sorry to see him go as well. :)

We are very sorry to see him go. The Magic was HIS baby! He was so proud of her.

we met hans on our cruise last march. there has been no official announcement of why he is no longer with disney, and its unlikey we will ever know why he left. a couple of people have posted that he left not long after the "fire" cruise, hinting that maybe that had something to do with his leaving. from what i have read he and the crew handled the "event" very well, but hey, you never know.

From what we heard on board, it was just coincidental timing and had nothing to do with the fire...he was commended for his handling of the situation. We'll miss him too...we really enjoy meeting up with him on several of our cruises. We have had the pleasure of meeting all the Disney captains (Henry, John, and Tom, as well as Staff Captain Thord), and they are a great bunch.

everyone seems to be assuming the worst...
perhaps he got an offer from another cruise line that he simply couldn't refuse...(disney isn't known as the highest paying company on the face of the earth)....
maybe he had a chance to work closer to home....
lots of possibilities...
maybe he won the lotto and is cruising on his own yacht....
anything is possible...

or maybe.....he's still with DCL but is supervising the building of the rumored third ship....:)

Sorry, this isn't about Captain Hans. Does anyone know what the cause of the fire was?

Thanks

No, that has not been publicly disclosed. And for both P.R. reasons and liability reasons, we will probably never know.

in the newspaper article i read at the time it said something about a fat fire inside one of the stacks from one of the kitchens...
but that was just a local orlando paper, so who knows if that was accurate or not...

was on RCL sovereign when they had fire in 1991

all reports are public documents and available from NTSB if you are really that curious.

can be a real eye-opener

Hi cin, thanks for the link. Yes, I am curious about what caused the fire on the Magic more because of my general interest in the sea (hurricanes, lighthouses etc) than anything else. I searched the ntsb site thoroughly and found nothing at all about the March fire.

What was the 1991 fire on RCL like? Did you have to evacuate the ship?

Thanks,
TT

I too am sad to see Captain Hans go. He captained both our inaugural 7-day cruise in August 2000 as well as our cruise this January. I've even got a big poster hanging in our house that was signed by him. He will be missed.

I, too, searched the NTSB site thoroughly and found nothing on DCL . . plenty on others though! hazmat1212, did you find anything on the Magic fire? It's strange that Carnival and others would have to be public record, and DCL does not.

The NTSB typically releases final reports around two years after a transportation accident or incident.

It's only been a little over five months since the stack fire on the Disney Magic.

Thanks for letting us know, Werner. I really enjoyed visiting your web site.

it was awful, but MOST passengers had no clue

long story short, crew was woefully ill-prepared, capt refused to speak english (which we had since learned he knew fluently), capt refused to call PR fire dept, or the coast guard for 3+ hours while the fire burned in the main showroom.

(we were closer to what happened than most because my DH is a career F/F and had become friendly with the security director, who sought out DH help)

the good news was we were docked in PR ---
finally evacuated after 3:00 a.m.
never got to St Thomas...turned around back to miami after Coast Guard released ship.
got all $ back, even airfare (it was a pkg!)

MY WORDS OF WISDOM
don't take the DRILL lightly.

from my one experience with the boat drill on the Wonder, the crew took it VERY seriously...
our drill captain was the actor who plays hades....he was a laugh riot but was nevertheless very very very serious about making sure everyone was there and knew what they were doing...(while keeping us entertained the entire time)...

menwhile, as i wacthed the ship next to us during theirs it didn't seem they were taking it at all seriously....
being the worrier that i am, i was very happy that the Wonder crew seemd so serious about the drill...

i meant, as a family --- in an emergency, i don't count on the crew saving my life, i count on myself - learned that the hard way on RCL/sovereign

be aware of where the exits are in relation to your cabin, especially for at nite ---

count the # of doorways from your room to that exit, if there's smoke and you can't see, and you have to crawl your way out.

have an alternative if that way is blocked

have a meeting place for your family if you are in separate places, and an alternative to that place, again if it is inaccessable.
there IS a lot to think about.

fire safety doesn't stop when you leave port, no different than you should have an exit plan at home ...

Sad to hear about the Captain. I believe he was the one that signed our print on our Inaugural and only Disney cruise so far until DVC Feb. cruise:p To the veterans do they still sell prints on board and have signings?

On the other subject It is wonderful to see some people take this stuff seriously. It always amazes me how a few people can talk/goof off and not take safety briefings seriously.Notice it more on airplanes than on the boats.Don't know if it is because they have heard it before and/or just plain being rude.

Thanks for the update and the advice, hazmat. Wow, what an ordeal. I'm glad it turned out ok.
