Captain EO?

It's been said before that Captain EO isn't likely to be replaced until they have something new to put there and I'm inclined to agree. TBH, I could see them replacing it with the original Magic Journeys for EPCOT's 30th next year to prolong whatever plans they have for the pavilion.

The problem with going back to HISTA is that its far more dated than Captain EO. Why? How many kids nowadays know (much less want to watch) a film inspired by a movie franchise that is no longer popular. I agree that Captain EO isn't exactly an awesome film, but HISTA is/was not any better. However, I think Captain EO has more universal appeal than HISTA due to MJ's performance skills. He's well-known across the globe whereas Honey I...
franchise is not. (The first film was the only one released overseas.)

TBH, my concern at this point is that they will opt to put in another franchise in the theater and then decide to carry that over to the ride and get rid of Figment again.

Saw EO for the FIRST time recently at DLR. We thought it was a hoot! What a time capsule of the 80s--the hair, the costumes, the puppet effects, MJ looking happy and handsome at his best singing and dancing. Never intended to be a film masterpiece...just amusing, primarily aimed at kids with a good message.

Lighten up EO bashers!

O.K. not a big MJ fan here but the wife is.
She brow beat us into sitting through this thing in June of 2011. There were probably 30 people total in the audience (to say its lost its appeal is a understatement). I grew up in the late 70's/80's and the before hand vids outside were more interesting than the show. We were there with 2 teen girls and their first comments were like the following... "really muppetts?", "OMG this is so lame", "can we sneak out and leave mom here?", "is the gay guy Michael Jackson?", "if is sit through this you are so doing SpaceMountain with me"....etc....

Certain things are timeless and some are not. Safe to say this is not. God bless the man for whatever good he did in life and as for the rest let him be judged by those better than me. In my opinion its time to put the box lid on this old hat box and wish it well.
Avatar anybody?

I for one wouldn't mind seeing it again.I doubt it will be there when I get back so I guess I'll just have to remember how it was when I saw it back in the day.Funny that alot of people respond so bad to michael jackson,I mean you got ellen degeneres across the way(universe of energy) and I don't really think she has a sterling reputation either.Oh well each to there own!:cool1:

Exactly this! Nobody here ever seems to say anything about Ellen DeGeneres, Whoopi Goldberg, Tim Allen, Cheech Marin, George Carlin, or anyone else who has done any Disney-related work and is also known for things that aren't kid-appropriate. That's what really baffles me about the Captain EO discussions here- if people don't like the show just because they simply don't like it, fine, but it seems like every time this topic comes up, people can't resist slamming Michael Jackson. If there was a celebrity I really strongly disliked to the point that I wouldn't be able to enjoy a movie they appear in, I just wouldn't watch the movie, and then I would have nothing to complain about. I don't get why that's so hard for a lot of people here.

Since it had been years, it was kind of nice to see Eo again, but it reminded me of how bad it was in the first place and why it didn't last very long. Next time I'm back, I won't bother with it if its still there. If they want to show Michael Jackson, I'd rather just watch the Thriller video with a little theming.

Anyway, I hope they're working on a permanent replacement for HISTA. If not, HISTA is at least watchable.

Is Captain EO still in Epcot? We were there in June and there was mumblings from the CMs that it was possibly closing before the end of the year? Truth or just CM stuff?

Also, if it does close what would you like to see replace it? :)
Wow -- tough crowd. I appreciate Captain EO for what it is. Of course -- it's cheesy now but back then it was cutting edge technology. It was great to see the humble beginnings for so many famous people in one short film -- and the floor moves. That said -- once was enough -- we'll only go back if we're caught in the rain or something. :upsidedow

I read on another thread somewhere that Figment will be replacing Captain EO.:3dglasses
