How is the food at Cape May? I love shellfish, what kind do they have?

Here's the menu:

Cape May gets mixed reveiws on this board and about a year ago I posed a question to the DIS asking "Do you like Cape May? Yes or No: Please tell me where you are from"

I had a theory and my unscientific research here on the DIS proved my theory.

If you are from someplace known for good seafood such as Maryland, New England, the Pacific Northwest, even the gulf to some extent. Chances are you wont like Cape May.

If you are from a land locked state where its harder to get the freshest of fresh fish then you might like it.

Of course to each his own and your likes my not reflect those of others, different strokes and all that.

So honestly there is no way for me or anyone else on the DIS to tell you for sure if you will or won't like it. But my research above proved my theory to be pretty accurate.

Also people have reported quality variations some say shrimp were chewy or mushy...others say they were fresh and tender. With seafood it is sometimes hit or miss.

Yes I realize that...I live in Hawaii and unfortunately pretty much all our shellfish is flown in although there a MANY places that do serve fresh live. As in any restaurant, peoples opinions can vary widely. I love Boma but many people say they were really dissappointed or hated it.

This place is more toward the bottom of my list but I still would love some feedback good or bad.

We enjoy the atmosphere and the fact that being a buffet, it has some variation for everyone. While it's not the greatest culinary example at WDW, the food is (in our experience) consistently good and the restaurant is VERY kid-friendly. It doesn't matter which resort we stay in, we'll always go there at least one meal per trip (usually it's 2-3) just to enjoy a relaxing evening with good food. Here's a sample menu:

SOUPS
New England Clam Chowder
Cape May's Tomato Bisque with Basil

CARVING STATION
Hand-Carved Prime Rib of Beef with au jus and horseradish cream

SALADS
Mixed Lettuce with Dressing and Condiments
Casear Salad
Broccoli Salad
Potato Salad
Ambrosia
Seafood Salad
Cole Slaw

AMERICAN SIDE OF BUFFET
Smoked BBQ Pork Ribs
Mashed Red Skinned Potatoes
Chef's Vegetable Selection
Steamed Corn on the Cob
Pasta du Jour
Steamed Red Bliss Potatoes

SEAFOOD SIDE OF BUFFET
Farm Raised Clams with Garlic Butter
Prince Edward Island Sound Mussels with Roasted Tomato Butter
Seasonal Fish du Jour
Steamed Peel & Eat Shrimp

CHILDREN'S BUFFET
Macaroni & Cheese
Mini Hot Dogs
Crispy Fish Nuggets
Fried Chicken Strips

DESSERT BAR
An Array of Assorted Desserts
like key lime pie, assorted cookies, brownies, peanut butter bars,
chocolate cake, Oreo bon bons, flan, cheesecake and cupcakes

We're from New England and I can tell you Cape May is absolutely awful!!!

Sorry but I had to be honest.

:lmao: Heehee! Guess it might be like eating at a Red Lobster...

Yes, this is the reason I could not go to any of the restaurants at the Poly resort. I'd probably laugh at what they serve there.

Your opinion is appreciated nontheless!

I live in the San Francisco Bay area where fresh seafood is available. My reason for loving Cape May was the fact that they made eating at buffet so easy for me. I am a celiac (no wheat, rye or barley). The chef came out and walked me through the line showing me which items I could eat. He then offered to cook up some salmon or other fish for me if I'd like. After a long day in the parks it was great to go somewhere I could relax both physically as well as not having to worry about what I was eating. That's the magic of Disney. :mickeybar

We're from NY originally and normally get pretty good seafood (we LOVE visiting Boston because of the seafood). We aren't picky eaters though, except for me when it comes to lobster (has to be fresh live Maine!!!) and we both liked Cape May well enough.

It was a buffet so I never expect much there to begin with. It wasn't as good as the Crystal Palace or Boma's and the selection of seafood wasn't very good. I didn't like that the peel and eat shrimp was warm (I saw a lot of people mention this and prepared myself) and I'm not a huge clam/fish person anyway. I'd rather have crab of any kind or fresh lobster. My mom liked the clams well enough but didn't rave about them.

Our service was excellent and the desserts were AWESOME. I wouldn't give the seafood the best rating, and we're seafood people. The food was hot, the mac and cheese was good and I loved the ambrosia.

Oh and I'd rather poke my eyes out and starve for a week than eat at Red Lobster. So it was at least better than that :rotfl2:

Amy, you're welcome. We have said the same thing that it's comparable to Red Lobster. We just aren't impressed with Cape May at all and won't be back.

We enjoy Cape May and it is a must on all our trips (we visit 4 times a year). It is the only buffet we still continue to visit. I'm not a seafood lover, but find the choices very good for myself. My husband likes fish dishes so is happy here. I do sample the steamed shrimp often and their salad selection is one of the best on property. I grew up in the Wash. DC area and the MD shore was our summer vacation spot. I don't go to WDW looking for crab cakes comparable to the Maryland's so I'm never disappointed.

I was just trying to let the OP know what she would be getting for her money, and not to expect quality seafood.
