Can anyone offer suggestions of things to do in this area? We booked a 3 day stay in Cape Coral to tack onto the end of our WDW vacation this coming March. What is there to do within a 45 minute or so drive? Any standout beaches or nature preserves?

TIA for any suggestions! :)

You will be near Sanibel/Captiva island. Look those areas up for beaches, shelling, and the JN Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge.

Thanks. :) We stayed at the Gateway area last year, but we really only saw Sanibel. Are there any interesting things to see/do around Cape Coral, or between? We're not too interested in Ft. Myers Beach.

Thanks!

I have relatives in Cape Coral and will email them. But be warned that they are not quick in getting back to me!

When I was a teenager I visited Cape Coral with my mom to see her BFF from HS. There are 3 things I remember from that trip... finding sand dollars on the gulf floor at Fort Myers Beach (this was about all I could find online)... http://www.best-florida-beaches.org/fort-myers-beach-florida.html, finding shark teeth on the gulf floor at Venice Beach (http://www.veniceflorida.com/shark.htm), and the amazing Key Lime Pie on Pine Island with baskets of steamed shrimp (don't even think this place exists anymore). Have fun whatever you do!

Okay, I have a few more ideas for you, courtesy of my relatives:

Edison-Ford Winter Estate in Fort Myers

Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary run by the Audubon Society, it is located south of Fort Myers

On Sanibel: Shell Museum & CROW (Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife) to tour. There is also a restoration of historic buildings on Sanibel to give a sense of what life what like on the island at the turn of the century.

Captiva Cruises to take a daytime cruise of the barrier islands with a commentary.

We just got back from the Cape last night. We have a house there. We just recently found a fabulous restaurant called, Brew Babies. We spend a lot of time at the Yacht Club. The Ford's Garage is wonderful for Burgers and it is right on Cape Coral Parkway.
Check out Manatee Park. There is a neat nature trail outside of Napels. It goes through a swamp! I'll try to find out the name.

Thanks so much for the suggestions! Please keep them coming. :) We plan on seeing Sanibel for a day, then spending the other two exploring other parts of the area.

I, too, recommend Sanibel. We've been vacationing there every summer for the past 15 years. On the way to the island is a pretty decent outlet mall if you're into that--Gap, Guess, Coach, etc.

Once on the island, take the Stars and Stripes boat ride to see the dolphins. They jump behind the boat so closely that you can almost reach out and touch them. Sometimes the captain will turn the boat off next to them as they're hunting for fish and it's so amazing to hear them take their breaths. Be sure to get there about 10 minutes before your ride time so that you can be first on the boat and sit in the back. Also, be on the lookout the entire boat ride--the more eyes looking out for dolphins the better!

Also, Sanibel Grill has the most amazing fried grouper sandwich and sweet potato fries. This is coming from someone who usually hates fish! Or, if you like burgers, Cheeburger Cheeburger has AMAZING burgers and any milkshake flavor/combination imaginable.

JN Ding Darling can be hit or miss. There've been times where we've seen not a thing and times we've seen 6 foot gators.

If you make it over to Captiva, there are some of the most eye-poppingly stunning homes on the beach there. Also, the Bubble Room has a to-die-for Red Velvet cake. Their food on the other hand is not the greatest so I recommend buying the cake at the counter and eating outside the restaurant at their outdoor tables which are open to anyone. If you'll be on Captiva in the evening, I heard some place has hermit crab races which always sound fun.

The beaches are definitely some of the best for shelling. If you find a junonia shell, you get your picture in the paper!

If you're looking for an eclectic shopping experience, try "Needful Things" in the same strip mall as Cheeburger Cheeburger.

Hope this helps!

My son just got back from the Ft Myers area. They are doing quite a few upgrades to the Ringling Museum in Sarasota. We really enjoyed boat tours around Sanibel. My kids like the Mote Aquarium. I would love to go to the Ford, Edison museum but have never been able to interest my kids.
