Question for all of you Universal experts, we're not sure if we can afford to stay on-site, we are trying to figure things out. But if off site, what is your best recommendation of where to stay with a family of 5, close to the park and an excellent hotel. Thanks for your input.

We're staying at the Sheraton Studio City. Its half a mile for US/IOA. I got it on Hotwire for $62/night (including all taxes and fees). I put in just the Universal area and its a 3*. If you read betterbidding.com you can get an idea of the different hotels.

Here's the hotels directly across the street.
Universal Offisite Hotels

The Amerisuites would be a good one to check out. They have recently been bought by Hyatt and they're changing things a little so the pictures on this page are already outdated.
Hyatt

Here's another idea.
Hilton Homewood Suites

Be sure to check out mousesavers.com. They give recommendations for offsite hotels and you can also get discounted rates thru the website. They are referring to offsite Disney hotels and some are in downtown Disney but still not that far from USF. We are considering the same thing to save $$$.
We are also doing seaworld and the space center so we may stay offsite for those days and then go to onsite hotel for a night or two.

go online and check out the promos on sam's club website for orlando/universal area.

We just got back on Friday and really liked the Homewood Suites on American Way. We had a small kitchen w/ full size fridge, microwave, 2 burner stove top and dishwasher. Living room had pull out sofa and bedroom had 2 queensize beds. Very comfortable and a great hot breakfast buffet included in the rate.
