Can't modify an existing resort reservation!!!

Book the extra night. Later call guest services and have them combined
The theory is if the entire reservation isn't available new you can't make the change. Why should you be able to make a booking not. Available to other guests
Too many guests play games

I did book the night as a separate reservation. I just didn't want to have to check out and switch rooms. The inconvenience of that almost made me not book the extra day.

We requested to remain in the same room but there is no guarantee. I will call as it gets closer and ask if they will be willing to combine the two reservations

If I want to drop a couple nights, I will. If Disney says no, then they will lose the entire reservation and I'll vacation somewhere else.

There are times when the hotel's desired outcome is that you cancel your reservation. For example, the hotel may be oversold or the software believes they can easily sell your room at a higher price.

I have mixed thoughts. OP spends a lot of nights at WDW. She shouldn't have to go through hoops to fine tune her reservations. I see the other side.

When I plan a vacation I check family members vacation schedules, check airfare and hotel availability. I then book. Some posters basically book on spec. They want to book when there is availability of discounted rooms. Months later they want to chop off days. Other guests, looking to make a real booking, were shut out. A system which basically says you have no advantage by booking early, but now want to make changes, over a guest who wants to book today makes a lot of sense. Universal has been doing this for years, at least with annual pass discounted rooms.

Another possible issue. Hotels overbook. Disney may have overbooked even more to accommodate guests impacted by Irma. It's possible some resort rooms had to be taken out of inventory.

The current wording is probably legally sufficient but misleading to guests accustomed to the old policy. In this context availability means it's not available for change unless it's also available for new bookings.
Thanks Lewisc! One would think they could check their extensive file on me and see that I'm not trying to pull something.....lol!!! I did my research, due diligence, all that. But, my plans changed. I can understand not being able to add two days...it's the week prior to Food and Wine Race Weekend! But, to drop nights shouldn't be so hard!

And I would have done that, in a heartbeat. But this particular trip is different. I"m traveling with my daughter, who has her own room. She wants to be able to easily get back and forth between the resort and the parks, without my having to drive her. If we cancelled this reservation, she would then have to rent a car, and drive in an unfamiliar area. Staying onsite is the best solution.
As for booking off-site resorts? I've started doing that! I can get a lot more room for my dollar if I stay off-site. But, I do have to rent a car. I've been doing that more often, so it's not a huge deal. And I'm getting more and more familiar with the area...so driving isn't a pain anymore.

Was wondering if guest services ended up accommodating your request? I just attempted to drop a few nights from my dec reservation and was told the same information! This is new to me as well, we have been going every Dec since 2004 and I have always been able to modify my ressies. I can understand its more difficult to add days as there may not be availability but to drop days? My daughter is first year University and just this week got her exam schedule :( and unfortunately what I booked disagrees! I gave the kids the option of cancelling and rebooking at a different hotel later in Dec but they have their heart set on the Poly so we decided to just shorten the vacay instead. I am still more than 30 days out so the cast member thought she should be able to modify no problem but instead had to send my request to guest services. I am really not happy with the way the reservations modifications are being handled and am somewhat worried that we will not be able to modify and have to cancel altogether. I understand Disney can certainly afford to lose my business BUT when I've been visiting since 2004, stayed on site always but once I should expect better from a company that offers such a high caliber of customer satisfaction. I am hoping for the best and would love to hear from others their experience with this type of situation! (hoping for all happy outcomes of course)!!!
