We will be staying at the All Star Sports Sep. 21-29th with the free dining package. My parents have now decided that they would like to come and will be staying at Fort Wilderness in their trailer. I called Disney to ask if I could be at a resort closer to them such as Port Orleans Riverside or French Quarter. I was told that there is no availability for that time at ANY of the resorts. I realize that the promotion is closed, but I am bringing more people and want to pay them more money to upgrade to a moderate resort. They said the only way to do it would be to give up the free dining. I said they must have a room available there, I already have the free dining package paid in full, could I just move the reservation there. The answer is no, no and no. Any one else with problems?:sad1:

The idea of the free dining promotion (or any other deal for that matter) is to fill rooms at specific resorts. So, if POR already has had enough bookings, then they don't feel the need to provide a discount. So, it's not that they don't want your money, it's just that they have enough bookings already and are willing to hold out for someone else who will pay more money for that moderate resort.

Unfortunately that's just the way these things work.

Even though there may be rooms available at another resort, when there's a special offer like Free Dining, they only set aside a certain number of rooms for the promo. The only suggestion I can make is to keep calling to see if someone has cancelled their Free Dining package.

See the link in my signature about changing a FREE dining reservation.

The CM's who answer the phone will ALWAYS say no.

But you can ask to have them check with Guest Services. Guest Services may STILL say no.. but they are the only ones who really 'know' and have the power to make a change like you are requesting.

It can be done IF there is availability at a resort for your dates and IF you ask Guest Services to make the change.

Good luck!

Calling to see if someone cancelled won't work either!

I asked that before and they said if its cancelled by someone then the reservation special is forfeited to everyone.

I thought this was pretty crappy on their part, if they have a "certain number of rooms available for discount" than they should keep to their word. After all, even with the discounts on rooms, they get a ton of money from people staying there with all the other expenses.

Not to burst anyone's bubble but Disney doesn't have to offer any discount if they don't want to

The easiest way to see if there is availability for your dates is to check what is available with the current discount at a specific resort. If it comes up available with the current discount there is a good chance that a supervisor can change the free dining over. If there is no availability coming up with the current discount then it is a safe bet that the free dining will also not be available to the resort you want to change to

I don't agree. They don't tell anyone what the number of rooms they have available are so noone should have expectations of being able to get a certain resort or being able to make changes after the promotion ends. They didn't break their word to anyone.

I'll be the lone dissenter who says they don't have any problem with Disney not allowing someone to switch to another resort and maintain free dining. I liken it to a sale at a regular store. Let's say Target has all their shirts on sale during the month of June, so during the month of June you pick up a shirt for $5. Then, in July, you decide you wanted the shirt that was $10 instead and head back to Target expecting them to take back the $5 shirt and sell you the other shirt at it's discounted price of $10 even though the sale is up and it's now priced at it's regular $15 price. They're not obligated to do that when they've made it clear that the sale was for the month of June only. It works just the same for WDW and their free dining offer. The promotion has a set deadline that all guests are aware of and that's it. It'd be great for you (the collective you) if they did honor the now expired promotion, but no one has a right to get in a huff (not that anyone on this thread did) if they don't.

I've thought about calling and asking to be switched because ASsports main pool is going to be down for refurb. I was not told this when I made the reservation. Pop, ASmo and ASmu had availability at the of the reservation. Had I known that the main pool would be out of commission I would not have chose that hotel. I'm wondering if I should email to ask about being switched. I know I can use the other pools at the other AllStars but seems kind of silly. We wanted to lounge by the pool and have a few cocktails while DD14 swims. Not have to walk back to our resort. Think my chances are any good?

You CAN switch resorts with Free Dining, IF there is availability for Free Dining at the resort you're interested in. I have been trying to upgrade from POP to any moderate without success. On Sunday, I inquired about switching to Wilderness Lodge (two rooms). After being on hold for quite a while, the CM said she had Guest Services on the other line and they had availability at Wilderness Lodge with the Free Dining. I was then transferred to Guest Services. The CM was very nice and asked me if I was absolutely sure I wanted to change from POP with Free Dining to Wilderness Lodge with Free Dining. The difference in price was approximately $1,000 (two rooms). I decided to keep Pop. A thousand bucks is a lot of money and we've already been to Disney once this year (BWI).

My point is - it can be done if there is availability with Free Dining at the resort you want to switch to. At this point in time, there isn't much available.

There have been several other posts about this topic in the past few weeks and those who are successful in switching have been able to do it by speaking with Guest Services.

O.K....what you need to do its speak with guest services. The floor agents can no longer get it as "free dining" is over...technically. However, if you get a good guest service agent, they will be able to go into the back end and see if the resort is still available..if it is then ONLY guest services can make the change for you!! Good luck!

The first time I called to switch resorts, Guest Services said nothing was available at any resort. Next time I called, a "supervisor" was able to switch us to the resort we wanted. I would try to call again. :)

This is what I did...cancelled my free dining package, rebooked using one of the new codes,(still inc dining tho) ended up saving more and changing resorts and upgrading to CL:) However, if there are alot of people on your res...there may not be a big savings....its worth a try though!

Do you know the codes?

It's not that there are a certain number of rooms available for the promotion. Try to follow me here ...

For each room category in each resort, they have a target occupancy rate in mind. If occupancy for any given date is ABOVE that target rate, then Free Dining isn't even offered to begin with. If the occupancy rate is below that target rate, they offer Free Dining, but only until the occupancy rate reaches/exceeds that target rate, and then it disappears.

Now, let's say the target ocupancy rate for, say, CBR preferred location rooms is 80% (I'm just making up the percentage here - Disney doesn't exactly e-mail me their super secret figures :rotfl: ). We know that CBR has 384 preferred location rooms. 80% of 384 is 307.2. So following this example, let's say that on the day before Free Dining is announced, CBR has 300 preferred location rooms booked for a given day. That means that when Free Dining reservations are open, CBR's preferred location rooms will be available for that promotion (for a given date). But as soon as they book 8 more rooms, they'll have 308 rooms booked, which is more than 307.2, and thus the next person who tries to book Free Dining in a CBR preferred location room for thatdate will be told Free Dining isn't available.

Continuing this example ... right now CBR is teetering at 308 booked preferred locaiton rooms, just over the 307.2 threshold for Free Dining. Then let's say at 3:00 p.m. someone calls to cancel one of those rooms, so now they only have 307 booked, which is less than 307.2, which means that Free Dining is open again!!! But only for one lucky person who happens to make a reservation while it's still available; once that next person takes a preferred location room for that date, Free Dining isn't available again.

Now, to address your question/concern, remember that 307.2 rooms figure, the target occupancy rate in this silly little example. Well, let's say that 370 of CBR's 384 preferred location rooms are booked. 370 is WAAAAAY over 307.2, so of course they aren't offering Free Dining anymore. If they have 370 rooms booked and 10 people cancel their Free Dining reservations, it's not like you can take their place! There are still 360 rooms taken, which is still way over the threshold for offering Free Dining.

So there's no "unfairness" going on, once you understand how it works.

Let's say you own a fruit and vegetable store. Let's say you bought 500 pounds of red apples and 500 pounds of green apples. You paid the same for all of them and charge the same for all of them. Well, in a week you sell 475 pounds of red apples, but only 100 pounds of green apples. Your red apples are selling like hot cakes, but your green apples might rot in your store and you'll lose your money. What do you do??? You lower the price of the green apples, that's what you do! You lower the price to make them more attractive to buyers. Even if you make less money on them, you'll still get SOME money back on them before they go bad.

Same thing with rooms at Disney ... they don't need to offer free promotions on rooms that are selling well. For rooms that aren't selling well, they lower the price (or in this case offer something else for free ... same thing!) to try to make some money back. To a hotelier, an empty room is just like rotting fruit to a store owner -- they both represent lost money.

Does that help?

I tried to do this, too. Unfortunately, there aren't any moderates available for my dates using the codes either. I have been trying for weeks to throw more money at Disney, but they don't want it.

Looks like it's Pop Century for us.

This is probably a silly question with an obvious answer...but if I'm staying at a moderate with free dining and want to switch to a Deluxe (WL)..that now has a promo going on for $140 a night...can I switch and get that rate if there's availablility? One can wish right? :)

Yes - but it would not include free dining! They are 2 seperate promotions / discounts.

But, WL at $140 a night is so great of a rate that you could pay for dining OOP! :) Believe me, if DH was off for Labor Day I would have booked that rate in a heartbeat!
