Can't carry on wedding dress onto plane

I have just been advised by the airline that we are travelling with that I am not allowed to carry on my wedding dress I am really upset about this as my dress is huge and it will take up loads of room in my suitcase, not to mention the extra worry of my luggage possibly going missing. She said that due to the recent security issues, they do no thave the time to check wedding outfits. I can try nearer the time incase this changes, but she said she really doubts it.

Just wanted to vent I guess, I'm angry and upset. I was told by my TA that it wouldn't be a problem.

OMG that's awful for you!! I know how important that was to you!

Couldn't you go back to the airline/TA and tell them the only reason you booked with them was on the word that you could take your wedding dress on board?

alot of uk airlines dont do this! I used to work for virgin atlantic and even they dont do it. they used to before 9/11 but since all the issues with that you have to check it in. I found a website that does boxes to fit in the over head bins

I know i'm going to get mine packed into a case that is small enough for me to take on board that way i know I have it with me, alot of the bridal shops will pack it if you ask them too

I know it would be expensive-- really expensive-- but it might save you time and hassell to ship it to Orlando a few weeks before and have the hotel hold it for you (then you could call and check on it frequently). Its scary but its an option!! Im sorry-- i would be upset too!

orangetiggs - I have checked that website but MyTravel Airways are now part of Thomas Cook and the box that is recommended for their hand luggage requirements is too small for my dress.

Am I worrying over nothing? Should I just put my dress in my suitcase and forget about it? I guess I just thought that it wouldn't be a problem, now I have something else to worry about. I am allowed to carry on my accessories (tiara, shoes etc) I am really glad I moved my wedding date now, cause at least if my luggage gets dealyed, or worse, lost, then I guess I will still have time to get another dress

Summer is there anyway you can pack your dress in a suitcase that you can carry on? I know my mom did that for her Vow Renewal and just had it steamed at Disney.

That's really bad news. I'm sorry you have to deal with this hassle!! I remember reading a post about using Carolyn Allen for dress steaming that mentioned you could ship the dress directly to her beforehand. And they'd hold it at their bridal salon and deliver it to your hotel. That might be less nerve-wracking than just shipping to a hotel, perhaps? I remember thinking that if for some reason my parents decided not to drive to Orlando (from New Jersey) with my dress, that I'd do that. Sorry I can't remember which thread that was, though.

I have travelled many a times with both the airlines mytravel formally airtours and thomas cook and never had any luggage go missing the only time I have I was traveling with continental.

I would still speak to your dress shop where you purchased it from as they deal with this alot and may be able to fold your dress so that it will fit into the overhead bins and then all you would have to do is let you dress drop all the creases out thats even if it creases. I have been told that mine wont crease and if it does just hang it up in the bathroom to steam.

I have already booked Carolyn Allens to steam my dress anyway, so I'm not really worried about creses or anything like that. I guess I could look into shipping it across to her prior to the wedding, I think maybe I'm getting paranoid in my old age

I shipped my dress and had no problems at all. Send it with return receipt and insure it. I know that coming from the UK is different, but I really had no problems sending it to Carolyn Allens.

I had a december 2006 wedding and Carolyn Allen's did mention that they would be happy to bring my dress with them the morning of the wedding if I wanted to ship it down in advance. Definately give them a call as that is a great option! Then send it heavily insured and give yourself plenty of time

Not sure if you can do this or not but you could check with airline.

I dont think there is a limit to taking just one suitcase only a limit to the weight, could you put your dress in another normal sized suitcase not the one with all your other belongings and then check it inwith your other luggage.

I had the same problem when I phone my airline. Apparently they stopped doing it as there was high demand with the dress on board the aircraft.

The way I am getting around it is, the box idea. My bridal shop is going to pack the dress into a hand luggage box (airline specification) and it is going to be my one piece of carry on luggage. My fiance is going to carry all the other bits in his carry on luggage.

Gosh that would be stressful - check in to shipping it directly to Carolyn Allens and try to do it in enough time so in case there are any glitches. I am so sorry for you....Hope this gets figured out-good luck

Summer I feel for you. I had the same problem.
We got married last September and I always intended on attempting to try to get the dress on the plane, (we flew with Virgin and i've seen many brides take their dresses on). But as it turned out that was the time there was all those restrictions imposed so there was no hand luggage. I just ended up putting my dress in a suitcase and my mum took it on her flight with travelcity direct a few days before us and it got there just fine.

Don't worry it will get there fine.

I decided not to take my dress on board, Virgin stuck about 40 tags all over it with Fragile on, and it was tagged properly to ensure it was going to Orlando. I had to take it to the fragile items part at check in. It got there no problem. Virgin were great with it.

Does that mean that you didn't put your dress in your suitcase? I'm just so worried about delays or even lost luggage
