Hey gang! I've never posted to this board before and am a photo NOVICE (and I mean NOVICE). We did some research and recently bought a Canon Powershot S5. Any opinions on this camera? I found the thread of S3 pics and was VERY impressed....

And with me being a novice, did I overbuy? (probably but oh well.....) Any tips for a new owner?

The S5 IS is just the S3's bigger brother, the S5 is going to be replacing the S3 soon
Both are great camera

Overbuy? I don't think so. The S5 is a great camera, and I'm sure you'll be happy with it.

The best tip I can offer is learn how to use the manual features (not just Manual mode, but P, Tv and Av) ... you'll get consistently better pics when you take control of the camera's controls.

Study pictures you like, on the S3 thread here or this one at DCRP; in most cases, the posters have included their camera settings. Also, if you use FireFox browser, you can get EXIF data viewer add-ons that will let you view the data yourself. You can see what settings (aperture, shutter speed and ISO) people were using when they took pics you like.

Also, here's a great site for learning about camera settings: www.GoingManual.com. I learned LOTS from them, and my picture taken has gotten much better, since.
