Canon S3

I took this at my preschool class on Valentines day.

By the way, is there a special thread for S10 IS? Bought one for my DD, and it's driving me crazy. I thought for a bit that I might upgrade my S3 to the S10 but I'm thinking not now.

So the S10 is harder to work. I also have the S3 and I love it.

Hello everyone, it's been a while since I've contributed anything on this thread. Thought I'd drop by again and share a couple of pictures taken yesterday:

Below are a few examples of what I was able to capture on my most recent trip to WDW. It was the first trip with the S5.

Camera Settings (from what I can remember, and some from EXIF Data):

Exposure Mode: Manual
Exposure Time: 0.200 s (1/5)
Aperture: f/2.7
ISO: 400

And I'm certain I had the camera set to Continuous shooting because I ended up with close to 300 fireworks pictures. Which is good because that gives plenty to go through and pick from the ones that I like.

These are certainly just some average examples of the images I got with those settings. Others here have had what I would call much better results. So hopefully others will respond as well.

Also, sorry if I added too many pictures, I know normally we try to keep the number of pictures/post down.

Hi there -- just got a SX110 IS and want to figure out some basic features for our upcoming trip. Best settings for vibrant colour, action shots and portraits.

A couple of suggestions which will greatly help.

1. Read the manual with your camera in hand to go through the button presses
2. Play with your new camera as much as you can now

That said... if you don't have time for much of either, then I'd at least skim the manual enough to learn how to modify the shutter speed and play with some of the settings. For action shots you can either set it to a 'sport' setting, or you can set the shutter speed fast enough to freeze the action.

Your camera likely has a vivid color option in the menu, which you can use if you like. I'd take a few test shots in normal and vivid to see which you like better.

For portraits you could use the 'portrait' mode on the dial (assuming it has one like the S5 does), but you'll want to make sure you put someone's face in the center of the frame, half press the shutter release (to set the focus), then while holding the shutter at the half press, frame your shot and finish pressing the shutter.

It seems that when I now plug my camera into my computer, I hear the little "bing bong" that tells me there is new hardware but my Canon import utility (you know, the one that came with the camera?) does not launch. When I launch it manually, it does not recognize my camera.

BUT, when I go to "My Computer" I can find it and manually download pictures there.

What might be wrong? Do you think this is a computer problem?

One thing you might want to try since the computer is still recognizing your camera, would be to re-install the Cannon import software. You should be able to pop in the disc and Install it again over the existing copy.

Anyone have or upgrade to the SX10 IS? If so can you please post your thoughts on the camera and some pics.

Also how is the S3/S5 for action pics? I don't need pro quality but if you took pics of any sports, I would be interested in your thoughts and pics. TIA.

The Canon S5 does pretty good with outdoor sports, at night and indoors you need to use the manual settings and high ISO levels, - a night football pic with the S5 -

Hi Debi! I replied to your PM, but here is a photo I took with my S3 during a band competition last fall - pretty good at stopping the girl leaping in the air:

I've only had my SX10 for a week, so I haven't had a chance to really try it out on action shots or anything, but since it's an upgrade of the S3/S5 and I absolutely LOVED my S3, I'm anticipating good results from the SX10.

I just bought the SX10 for my DD, and I have the S3. The SX10 takes wonderful pics, and the zoom is terrific. My Raynox telephoto lens can't touch the SX10. The pics are really detailed, and focuses much more quickly in low light situations. There are some disadvantages to the SX10, however. I must say they couldn't have possibly come up with a worse lens cap. It's hard to clip it back on to the lens, and there's no tether when you remove it. I much prefer the "toggle" on the S3 instead of the scroll wheel to change settings on the SX10. Also, I prefer the S3 display switch being the same as the photo switch. On the SX10, you have to push a different button to display the photo in the LCD. Also, with the SX10, you can't add lenses or filters as the end of the lens isn't threaded. If Canon would combine the functionality of the S3 with the technology of the SX10, it would be a great camera.

Let's see if I can remember how to get pics on here.....okay apparently not. On photobucket, what code do I use to get pics here?

Oh yes, I completely forgot about that darn lens cap on the SX10. I hate it! I'm sure I'll lose it soon. They DO have a little clip on it so you can clip it onto the camera strap, but I was used to the tether on my S3. I'm hoping once DH's work lets up a bit maybe he can come up with a similar tether for this lens cap.

Your post reminded me of a couple more things: I DO like the placement of some of the buttons to change settings, especially the button for exposure compensation. On the S3, you have to go into the function menu, but on the SX10 there's a button on the back, so it's one-step to change the exposure comp. And even better, the viewfinder displays the exposure compensation all the time; on the S3, you had to go back into the function menu to see if you'd changed the exp. comp. (I had an entire afternoon of photos that came out way too dark because I'd adjusted the exp. comp. on my S3, forgot to set it back to 0, and then I was shooting in bright sunlight and couldn't see the viewfinder or lcd screen very well to notice that the photos were all under-exposed.:headache: What a pain to adjust them all in Photoshop later!)

Another thing on the SX10 that I think I'll like but haven't really had a chance to experiment with is the face detection. I was taking some flower photos in church on Easter Sunday and somebody walked by while I was lining up my shot, and the face detection followed him on the screen as he walked past. Pretty neat!

This is made to fit around an slr lens but you could easily attach it to the camera body or the camera strap. It can be bought at most camera stores or it's $1.69 at Amazon.

Cool! looks like the same type of tree. Any idea what type of tree it is? If not that's fine, I was just wondering. Also, I went to the Biltmore Estate this past weekend and have a couple of pics that are my favorites. I hope 3 pictures isn't too many.
