I'm trying out the portrait mode in order to get a good pic of DS for his 3rd birthday (trying to save some $$ by not hiring a photog).

It seems that when I push the shutter to take the pic, it focuses on the background and not on the face. Any help? I'm sure there's a technique that I just don't have yet......

Also, can anyone give me an example of when I'd use night scene vs. night snapshot? And example of each, maybe? THANKS!!!!

When you half press the shutter button you should initially see the yellow "AF frame" then when it turns green the auto focusing has locked on. Manual focusing using the zoom lever helps in some shots (requires the installation of the "CHDK" program) But you should be using the Av or Tv or manual mode because you can get better pics (potentially) . I don't think I've ever used the night scenes but if you don't use the flash (subject is more than 15 ft) you will need a tripod and longer shutter speeds. for more info and tips -

What an awesome photo! You should enter it in a contest or something...perfect pose for the squirrel with the pumpkin and corn, you got him holding a kernel in his paws. Wow!

I just picked up the new Canon SX10 IS. I used it this weekend at basketball and swimming and it really has a fast shutter speed.....compared to my old SX1. I can't wait to learn to use it and see what my Disney pictures turn out like.

Oh, be sure to post your photos!! I'm dying to get my hands on one as soon as our budget allows (darn economy!). Maybe you can start a new thread for that camera since this one is getting so huge. How's the zoom?

Zoom is really good optical to 20x where my old SX1 was only 10x. I had it zoomed all the way out to 20 and was taking a really good photo. If you try one out....zoom out as far as the digital zoom will take you and take the photo even though the screen looks distorted. The camera captures a good photo. I was pretty impressed with the zoom and camera for the money. I will post some photos once I get a chance to download them.

yes, post some of your new Canon SX10 pics.
The 20x zoom is obviously better but post some low light photos, supposedly the SX10 does a better job than the S series with higher ISO levels

I have had my Canon s3 for 2 years now and I find it's performance to be inconsistent. Now I admit that might be user error, but one problem I have a lot is incorrect focusing. If I take a photo of my daughter i the yard, often the grass, and trees behind her are sharp and she is fuzzy. I am not sure if there is a setting that can effect where it focuses. Sometime I get great pics and then other times, fuzzy and grainy without having changed the settings. Could any with one tell me what settings you have on the manual setting such as white balance, evaluative, etc?? The highlights are also getting blown out a lot.Thanks for the help!

The first looks like it was a slow shutter speed causing blur.On the second, the flash caused the face to be overexposed, it is not out of focus. On the third, you probably could have gotten better focus if you locked it and then recomposed the shot.

Can you tell me how to lock and recompose? Btw, I laugh every time I see your pic. You look just like a guy who used to be the youth minister at my church. I always do a double take to see if he is suddenly into photography.

with the S5 you half-way press the shutter and the yellow frame turns green when the auto focus has locked on. (I have my camera AF turned to shoot-only with the safety shift off) There is also an auto-focus sound but the sounds are turned off on my camera. ,

I really dislike having a neck strap for my camera, but don't trust myself to just carry it. I looked at the Canon site and can't find a wrist strap.

Does anyone have any specific suggestions of brands and stores/sites?

You could always just cut down the neck strap I suppose.

I would think it would be too heavy and awkward to carry on your wrist.

It's a lot more comfortable to wear it across your chest instead of all the weight hanging from your neck. That's what I did.

I know that OP/Tech has three diffrent styles of wrip straps that you can order from them. I have thought of getting one since I mostly use a bag to carry the camera in I have thought of using a strap when its out of the bag for safety concerns. I do agree that I would only do this in conjunction with a bag i wouldnt carry the camera all day attached to my wrist either.

There are loads of wrist straps to be found on ebay.

I bought one for my 350D. Not sure about it. It sits nicely on the camera, but when I try to put my hand through it and take pictures, it seems to want to make my wrist bend more sharply than it wants to!
