Good morning! I recevied my S3 yesterday, and have taken it out of the box... am learning my menus and settings. Haven't had much time to play as of yet, but had to run outside and do a few quick shots. I'm VERY happy with the decision.

of course the files are compressed because they're uploaded and resized, but the detail and clarity is impressive. Can't wait to play some more!

I've had my S5 for about two weeks, and I've been busy reading the manuals and the Shortcourses ebook I got. I have a million questions, but right now I'll ask just one: I took a still during movie mode and it came out much nicer than other photos I was taking of the same thing in P mode. Does anyone know what settings the camera uses when it is in movie mode?

Two more posts to go until I can show you some of my first photos!

OK, this is the one that was taken in movie mode:

This one was taken in portrait mode:

This one (of a weed in my backyard!) was taken using macro:

So funny that this is posted on the disboards because I really wanted to get this camera for our Sept '08 trip. My last powershot broke and I wanted to upgrade. Oddly enough as a pp I just traveled to Sedona for a spa vacation and I hurried up my purchase so I could have it for that trip. i still have a lot to learn with it though.

Okay...I've just been told I need to post 7 more times before I can post pictures...I'll be right back...bear with the next posts:laughing:

This is what I've started out with. I've had my camera since the middle of April

Ugh I just need one more post

I love my camera....anyone else using the neck strap?
:rotfl2: :thumbsup2
Anyone find a good tutorial out there for this camera?

I found these links earlier in this thread (I'm still trying to catch up - but, I'm into the 2008 posts finally!).

http://goingmanual.com/photo/ - not S3 specific, but very good for the price.

Sedona is great. It looks like you had great weather!

Okay I guess I don't need <br> sorry about that

nope.

Very nice pictures! I love that first one peeking through the branches.

Sedona is even prettier in the winter - not that this photo justifies the statement...

(Going back to page 82 and trying to catch up!)

We found a bird's nest at a new park near our house. I've manipulated these quite a bit in my editing program. Are they overexposed? I don't remember the exact settings I used, but I remember seeing the "raise the flash" warning. How can I tone down the flash?

The pictures do look a bit overexposed. You can adjust both the Flash Output and the Flash Exposure Compensation if you are shooting in certain modes.

Here's a link to the online manual that describes the function.

You can also step back and zoom in, the S3/S5 on-board flash isn't very powerful and a couple of feet might make a difference.

Also, you can diffuse the flash, a piece of tissuepaper held or taped lightly over the flash will work, and it will reduce the harsh background shadows. You can even make a decent flash diffuser from a ping-pong ball; just cut the "right sized" hole for the flash in one, and slip it on.

greetings S3/S5 family!

Don't know why they're different sizes when all sized the same in photobucket!? Oh, well...

HOWEVER - I have VERY important question for all you long time users/gurus!!
OK, so I've turned off all my sounds, but I discovered when I shoot video and take stills I get the little black "pause" and shutter sound. I though I read somewhere that it didn't do that... anyway, HOW DO I TURN IT OFF??? I'm in the process of editing it out as best I can from last night's video footage, but I'd like to be able to avoid it altogether if possible.

I just picked up my S5 IS last night... found a good deal on it at Circuit City for $299.99... I'm uploading some pictures I took today at a yard sale, soon as they're uploaded I'll resize and share them... After I finish playing with my new toy this weekend, I'll go back and do some of the assignments from earlier in this thread. I had read the whole thread after deciding on this camera, and the assignments looked fun.
