Canon S3

I really don't see much of a difference when I use it on my pic's :confused3 - or maybe it is just everyone else's amazing photo taking skills that mine simply will always pale in comparison!

Are you using it on pictures taken with a high ISO; 400/800/1600?

If you run it on pics with ISO 80/100/200 the differences will be slight because there's not much noise there.

Here's an example of what Noiseware *should* do for you.

This is a 100% crop of an extreme closeup of a fern taken with my DCR-250 Macro lens at ISO800:
Fern_noisy.jpg

You can clearly see the noise, especially in the darker area between the leaf lobes.

This is a 100% crop of the same image, after running it through Noiseware (default settings):
fern_NR.jpg

You can see that most of the noise is gone, and it looks *much* smoother.

The effect is more dramatic the more noise you have. It can also be more dramatic by switching from one setting to a more aggressive NR profile (like Full Suppression).

This kind of noise reduction looks *great* on most prints and can generally salvage a lot of noisy night no-flash night pics.

In Noiseware, you can switch between the noise-reduced image and the original simply by clicking anywhere on the image and see the differences immediately. You might also want to zoom in (as high as 100%) as resizing tends to also reduce the effect of noise....

Thanks! :flower3: I bet the ISO is the deal because I usually use the Auto function. I'm not very savvy about the options (or going manual) to take better pic's - I just need to learn!

Hi everyone, we're back from my DS' HS band trip to Disney and I wanted to post some of the pictures I took. I took the "dark" pictures in Sports Mode with the flash off and ran them through Noiseware. (Sorry there are so many of them!) We had a great trip and on the same day my DS and his band marched down Main St. my DFIL and my DH were chosen to be the veterans of the day together for the flag retreat ceremony! The whole family got to march toward the castle down Main St. behind them while people clapped and I told my DS and his friends that joined us while we marched how lucky they were to get to march down Main St. TWO times in one day! :cool1: A new experience at Disney and so cool!

Well, I took the plunge and my S3 is in the mail and heading to my house! I can't wait to get to learn all the fun this camera can do - we are heading to Arizona and I want some awesome pictures of Lake Powell, the Grand Canyon, and Sedona!

Thanks for all your help on these boards!

Band mom here......how about some photos of the band? And I'd love to see photos of the Flag Retreat - we saw this for the first time last summer and it was very emotional.

Great night shots, by the way!:thumbsup2

I didn't include pics of the band because I took video of them while my DMIL took the pics with her camera which is NOT a Canon S3 or S5 :) But here they are anyway! (My son is the first saxophone you can see right in the middle of the picture in the 2nd picture)

These pics of the flag retreat ceremony I DID take with my camera! It was emotional, after seeing my son march with his HS band and then seeing my DFIL and DH in the retreat ceremony my DMIL said "This day has been almost too much for me!" as she was tearing up!! ;) They each got a cool certificate and a Disney pin that said "Veteran of the Day", and my DFIL really loved it and was glad he did it! (He said he was going to say No when they asked him then he heard me say "Of course he does!" behind him! LOL)

Thanks for posting those photos, Carla! The flag retreat is one of those "little things" that most people don't even know about, and yet it is one of the most moving things I've seen. Congrats to your DH and DFIL!!

just bought an s5 last night...now to figure out how to use it!

Mine will be arriving Wed. I was already excited to get it. Seeing all of these pictures makes me anxious to get my hands on it. Using it may be a whole other story! I have already learned a good bit here.

Thanks for asking about them! I agree about the flag retreat, it wasn't something I had even seen before, but had heard of it. I made the remark that day about how many times we have been to Disney and yet, each time we go we manage to have a totally different experience than we've ever had before.

Glad you posted those!! I'm hoping there's an opening when we're there. My grampa's a retired USMC Captain, and, although he's a reserved man, I think he'd be incredibly honored to be involved in this. I'm sure I'd be all teary if we got to participate. I already tear up when I imagine the kids' faces upon seeing the castle and Mickey for the first time!!

Snow White, the pics of your kids you posted are so good! I love the one of your little boy swinging the baseball bat! Great rule-of-thirds! You should get that one in a frame!

I am a brand new owner of the Canon S5.:cool1: So far so good, I have been very happy with it. I have flipped through the book and read every post on this thread :surfweb: on gotten some AWESOME advice.:thanks:
I was goofing around with it the other night and decided to take a picture inside in sports mode and for the life of me can not figure out how to turn the flash on when it is in this mode. :confused3 I feel like a total idiot. can someone point me in the right direction? (Preferably not off this thread for being stupid!!!!)

I don't know if you CAN turn on the flash in that mode...:confused3 Off to read the little S5 book...
