Canon S3

Just returned from first trip to the World using a Canon S3IS (me) and S2IS (DH).

Thought I'd post as I notice a lot of people here either buying or thinking of buying these cameras (including the S5) in anticipation of their own trips. :wizard:

Overall, we were very pleased with the cameras and happy with our purchases. Many of our pictures came out better than when we used our old P&S cameras. We were able to get some decent shots in low light whereas previously we'd get mainly blur in similar settings. Our goal was "good shots", not perfect shots, so in that regard the cameras fulfilled our expectations.

I didn't really study the pictures while we were away but now that I've peeked at them since we're home I see many could definitely have been improved using a tripod and perhaps different settings or low flash. (DH and I had a friendly disagreement about using flash at times - fun to see whose pictures we prefer in the same settings.) But honestly, being the organizer of a trip for 30 people had me hopping most of the time and also it rained several nights so I wasn't always able to take pictures the way I would have liked to.

Also, neither of us is yet 100% technically cognizant of all the camera's features, though we're getting there - hopefully by next trip. I'm glad we spent many months getting used to the cameras as well as learning basic photography skills (formally for the first time) prior to our trip. I think it made a big difference in how our pictures came out. We kind of used a team effort in learning which made it seem less overwhelming. I brought Understanding Exposure along as my recreational reading, but short of the plane ride down, I was too busy having fun and taking photos to read much. :)

Knowing carrying the cameras was going to present a challenge since we each wanted to carry only one bag, we both spent time prior to the trip finding "just the right bag" in order to accomodate the cameras and other equipment like batteries, cards and small tripods (which turns out, we never used), etc, as well as our usual stuff like wallets, cell phones, water, sunblock, rain gear, what have you.

I got a messenger style bag which I used for both my camera stuff and regular pocketbook stuff. And DH got a (gasp! we've been told they're "out of fashion") fanny pack/waist pack/murse, LOL, whatever you want to call it - a medium sized multi-compartment bag that fit around his waist and sat on his fanny (very comfortable, he said). These essentially left our hands free, though admittedly mine was pretty heavy and hurt my shoulder a bit probably because I had too much in it, though I did try to keep it light. ;) Much of the time we wore our cameras around our necks, but often in restaurants and on rides, they went in the bag.

I would recommend that people new to using the camera definitely familiarize themselves with the settings under the function menu. This allows you to vary the settings according to the type of light you're shooting in and how strong you want the flash to be, etc. This came in handy especially for those tough indoor/low light shots.

I'd also caution on the S3 to be sure your finger doesn't accidentally hit the ISO button on the back thereby increasing the ISO unintentionally. I had this happen one morning taking numerous sunrise pictures and it kind of bummed me out. Fortunately, I can fix the photos using noiseware reduction, but it's a pain that I even have to do so. The button is handy to have (as opposed to the S2's which is in the function menu) but you just have to check it before your photo session. Ditto for the image quality settings which are easy to inadvertantly change, also on the function menu.

As for the video function, which is essentially why we picked up the S2 (though DH is learning to really love the whole camera), it's good and did the trick, but was a little "shaky" on some of the clips - using a tripod most certainly would have helped. On the plus side, you can take stills while shooting video and DH found out he could get some good fireworks shots while doing just that. We captured our shy son dancing  and other fun clips so we were glad we each had a camera.

Hope this is helpful. I'd be happy to answer any questions if anyone has any.

Just when I think I'm "getting it", I read what LPZ Stitch writes and I :faint: LOL. Seriously, he's been a big help to me in learning technical stuff! :thanks: Stitch!

I took this picture using the S3 from way back in the WDT, in front of the control box: hand held, no flash, program mode, almost full zoom and ISO of 400, I believe, and then ran it through noise reduction software.

Pea-n-Me, results are more important than settings, and that's a great pic!

You've certainly demonstrated that the S3 is a very capable camera *without* needing to mess with the settings as much as I was suggesting! :thumbsup2

If you'd taken that same picture with the settings I was suggesting, Goofy *might* be a little sharper (a faster shutter speed would probably have frozen him a little more), but the background and the other dancers would have been considerably darker ... probably NOT a better picture.

The settings I suggested work best when the subject is under a bright spotlight, and the rest of the stage is fairly dark; like the hyena/fire-dancer in FotLK....

Pea-N-Me!
Thank you for the report!! We're leaving in two weeks or so and I have the S2IS camera as well. I was glad to hear you were pretty happy with the results. Did your dh take any fireworks shots with the S2? Just curious how those came out and if he used the tripod or not? Would love to see comparison shots between the two cameras when you get a chance! No hurry, have fun settling back into being home! :)

Here are a few fireworks I caught on Sunday night. They were hand held, actually had my gorrillapod wrapped around my wrist and brased against my chest to try to hole it a bit more steady. Sorry for the horizon issue, we were on a huge hill (levy) and it was all I could do to keep from slidding down!! Feedback would be appreciated, as I would like to get some really good shots at Disney in a few weeks!! TIA!

this one was with manual settings and manual focus to infinity

The capture of the explosions is lovely!! Really sharp and great "tail detail" :)

I'd just crop out the angled/blurred bridge at the bottom of the images and/or crop them to just the trails and the blast! :thumbsup2

This is especially true of the 2nd pic ... those two sharp red blasts would look even better without the bridge and light-post to distract the eye. There's not as much distance between the blast and the bridge in the first picture which I think would make it look "low" if you cropped it....

Just seeing these sorts of awesome pictures is really getting me psyched up for our trip later this month! :goodvibes I hope my pics of Hallowishes come out this good!!

Thanks Pea-n-me - your report is great. I think, though, I'm going out shooting everything that I can, now, to practice!!!

I look forward to seeing your photos.

I'm with you on accidentally changing the ISO/f-stop etc setting! I have done that more than once, unfortunately in the darkness, so I didn't notice it!! Oh well, note to self - keep fingers away from silver button!!!! :lmao:

Thanks again.

Heather

Thanks Stitch! I took about 200+ pictures, I've deleted the duds off the camera, but still need to go back thru PS and delete them there. I have a few that have the bridge nicely illuminated (and straight) and they look pretty cool. The fireworks were shot off of a barge between two bridges over the river. Unfortunately, we didn't go a day ahead to save a primo seat!! They raised that speaker pole right before the show started - I almost lost my mind!! :headache: DH had to remind me we were there for the kids (the kids, of course, knew that we were there so I could practice!!!;) ) I'll try to get a few of the others that I think are the best and find the ones I shot on the "fireworks" setting as well. Just would like a good comparison on the different settings! Thanks again!
Blessings,

I can't seem to figure out how many pictures we have left. I am sure it is right infront of me but I can not see that counter, what am I doing wrong ?

OK, so it took me a while to go through 4500 pictures. :earseek:

The only editing done is noise reduction. I guess I left the ISO up on more pictures than I originally thought.

I'm saving some of the best ones for my albums and the weekly photo contests. ;) But here's a sampling of some of the others.

I'll begin with a couple of the same that we both took:

Wahoo!! I'm really happy with your S2 photos!! That makes me a bit less nervous going with a camera that's not been "Disney tested"!!!:cool1: I did think that the S3 shot of Mickey was more clear/sharp than the S2 one. Just seemed like the S2 focus wasn't totally there. :confused3 Anyway - thank you so much! Have fun playing with your 4000+ photos!! :3dglasses

Do you have the S2 or the S3? On the S2, it's not visible all the time, it only shows when you first turn on the camera for taking photos and it's in the lower right hand corner of the screen. Anyone know on the S3?:confused3

Okay, here's a few more fireworks. These I cropped a bit and ran thru a "defog" filter, similar to a sharpening filter, it sort of cleaned up the sky a bit. There was so much smoke, it was annoying, that in some of the photos it looks like finger prints! TFL and for feedback!!

Oh sorry , I fogot to say that I have the S3

Great photos. I have to ask, what show was that with Mickey and Minnie in yellow, with Woody on stage too and other Dancers?

Thanks
Vickie

Those are good!!! I love the night time ones - and Mickey in Fantasmic (I think! :) ) is great!
Actually I forgot to ask before - you mentioned you didn't use your tripods. May I ask why? Was it just too much bother? Just curious, as I am hoping to take a tripod with me (only a little one - Gorillapod, maybe) and am wondering why you didn't use yours..!!
Thanks for posting - I'll keep my eye out for more shots and your photos in the competitions!!! :surfweb:
