Canon S3

.... Fireworks were taken with the fireworks mode - without a tripod or any other place to steady camera - totally hand held!

Martha!!! what great shots of the Halloween Party!! The place looks empty as well - lucky you!! Your fireworks shots are awesome - I can't wait to go back next year and play around with this camera there!! (S2IS) You've inspired me, I may have to venture out over New Years and practice a bit!! Thanks for posting all your pictures - they were very fun to look at!! :thumbsup2

A card reader will upload pictures faster than uploading them straight off the camera.

Amy, yes the zoom is amazing...but I'm coming from a 10x zoom camera to this 12x zoom, so I'm not as excited as you are. But I once was. lol

I found some marching band / football field pics today online taken with this camera & thought of you. Let me see if I can find them again. Found it:
http://www.pbase.com/bearclause/cal_football The first album is from a Canon s1 (10x zoom)...and the second album is Canon s3 (12x zoom).

And re: card reader. I have an SD reader from a 1999 camera. In 2003, we started just using the USB cable & open "My Computer". That's what I'm still doing & its still very fast for me. I don't think I'll be going back to a reader. I have the USB cable plugged in & ready to use all the time because its the same USB cable we use for our 2 GPS's. So 1 cable serves 3 gadgets for us. :teeth:

I have an S3 and love it :)

The only extras I've purchased are:

Extra 512Mb high speed memory cards
Bag (Tamrac)
Lens hood/lens adapter (enables filters and wide-angle/tele lens adapters to be fitted)

Only thing that annoyed me a little was the fact that the detailed manual comes on CD and not hard copy. All you get is a quick start manual in the box. When you print it out on A4 paper it's quite a large document.

That's odd, I received the detailed manual with mine along with the quick start guide.

I also rec'd the quick start & detailed manuals in the box..

I use the USB cord as well..has always worked okay for us.

Glad to hear that you are enjoying your new camera--it is great isn't it!

Thanks for the replies about USB v. card reader. BTW Steve, I love your avatar! :thumbsup2

Yep, my detailed manual also came in booklet form yesterday. I brought it to work today so I can sneak some time to read it.

Geez, I feel like a kid on Christmas with this new camera! Can't wait to go home and play with it! :goodvibes

Hey Martha are you out there?

I have the S2IS and was wondering what settings you're using for night pictures. I just got mine so I've got a lot to learn?

Also what would you suggest for Spectro?

I've been resizing them to 640 x 480 to upload to photobucket. That's probably too small huh? Should I go larger? I'm probably loosing some detail. But I didn't know how painful that would be for dial-up people to view.

Nice! I just bought one and you just confirmed to me that I made a good decision. Thanks! :thumbsup2

Today's my day off and I'm going to play with my new S3!! Went to Best Buy last night, trying to decide between a 512MG SD card for $39.99 and a 1GB card for $59.99; the salesman came over and asked if I wanted a 2GB for $49.99 - it was on sale this week and they actually had some left. You can bet I snapped up that deal! :thumbsup2

Ok, grocery shopping first. Must feed my family before I start playing with my camera and forget everything else.

Have fun Amy. I got a 1GB card when I got the camera...but a 2GB "back up" card ;) is a good idea too. lol Please post some pictures. Can't wait.

I've been trying to get out at night to get some pics, but haven't been feeling great last couple of days with wicked headaches.

Must be a UK thing :(

Do you speak Spanish? ;) The USA box comes complete with everything in English & Spanish. I can send you all the Spanish paperwork & manuals. :teeth:

Hi! This is my first post on the Photography Board. I am hoping someone can answer a question.

Is it worth the extra $100 or so for the S3 over the S2? The S3 has more MP. I don't print many of my pics they mainly stay on my computer. Other than the increase in MP, are there any major upgrades to the S3?

I currently have a 4 year-old Olympus that is 3.2Mp with a 2.8x zoom, so anything would be an improvement.

Thanks for your help!
Denise

Here are some pix I took today. It's been raining like crazy all day, so I've been limited to indoor shots of my "babies".

Here's Sheba; she had red-eye which I corrected using the Canon software:
IMG_0034.jpg

Here's Charlie; he ended up with green-eye which I couldn't correct.
IMG_0038.jpg

And a close-up of Charlie's nose just for fun:
IMG_0040.jpg

Now I read somewhere that when using the flash, people end up with red-eye, but animals get green-eye. So how come Sheba had red-eye? Does this mean she's really not a dog?? Or maybe it has something to do with her Husky eyes - one blue, one brown. And maybe this is a question for the vet and not you photo folks, huh? And does anybody really care?

By the way, a while back I started a "vent" post on this board about the shutter lag on my old Canon A70 - I was trying to take pictures of my boys marching in a parade and ended up getting the rows behind them. Well........

Whilst trying out the diff. modes on my new S3 IS, I discovered that the sports mode has a continuous shutter! As long as you hold down the shutter, it takes a picture ever 1.5 seconds (you can adjust the time). NO SHUTTER LAG!!!! So now when I'm taking parade pix, I'll just start holding down that shutter while the whole band marches in front of me and I'll be sure to get a shot of both of my boys! :thumbsup2

So far, I'm lovin' this camera!!!
