Canon S3

Thank you Splash. That was the second shot I took. With the first shot of the guy with his dog, the dog was looking right at me, even though I was about 100 yards away. The grass behind them got way overexposed (could not recover a decent look in PS - still learning there too)...but I used my histogram and adjusted the exposure for the shot I submitted. Here are some shots I took yesterday at a place near Davenport called Pigeon Creek park, right on the banks of the Mississippi River.

Package from Beach was waiting for me when I got home from work....(ordered Friday morning)

My first impression, it's small (compared to the Rebel and 17-40mm) :cool1:

I found it hard to hold steady, need to look into those lens adapter and a real cap.

Go with the Lensmate adapter ... really high quality and great service from the company.

On other Canon/S3 sites, people have opted for the cheaper ones (or even the Canon one) and been disappointed with fit/quality.

I've never seen a complaint about the Lensmate one ... I leave mine on all the time.

My S3 arrived last night. I took it to work this morning, thinking I will try it out at lunch and then straight to DD's soccer game to do team pictures. But I forgot the manual at home!!!
So I've been reading the online manual and pretty much got all the buttons down. I own other Canons so I'm pretty familiar with the buttons and functions. But one little icon on the display is stumping me, it is so small that I can't really tell the shape... if you have the grid on, it's located on right mid grid, almost looks like 2 hands clasp together (praying for a good picture?) :)
In the online manual, a little airplane icon shows below it althought I don't have the airplane. Just the one like 2 hands clasp together.
Can anyone tell me what that icon is for?

Thanks so very much!!

the icon I think you are refering to looks to me more like 1 hand, with wind blowing on it, is actually the wind filter indicator. The wind filter is for the microphone that's built into the camera. you can turn it on or off in the menu under "Audio..."

Yes, that was it. I found it in Audio, turned it off and now the hand is gone!!

Just don't forget to turn it back on if you're shooting video in windy conditions -- otherwise there'll be a lot of noise from the wind blowing across the little microphone holes. :)

I'm hoping someone here can help me out. I can't find my instruction manual - it's somewhere in the piles of junk in my office. When I upload my recent pictures to Shutterfly, they tell me I have a poor resolution for printing larger than 4 x 6. This hasn't happened before. Did I accidentally change a setting on my camera? If so, could someone tell me how to change it back? If it's not the camera, any idea what I'm doing wrong when uploading?

Thanks for any help you can offer!

Thank you so much for the link, Dan. I've found the menu you were talking about with the Function key. The problem is I've fooled around with it so much, I don't know what I originally had it set at.

The resolution on my uploaded images is 640x480.

I have the "L" set for Large - I'll have to take a few test pictures and try uploading them to make sure I have things set right. I'm sure I'll be back to ask you more questions if I still can't figure it out.

Some of my first shots with my canon S3. Took the grandkids to the petting farm.

I need to work on my close ups.

Did your S3 come with a wrist or neckstrap? I am not seeing one in the box my DDs S3 came in.

If we have to purchase one - does anyone reccommend one over the other?

mine came with a neckstrap - I WISH it came with a wrist strap - LOL I feel reeeeeaaaaaly touristy with a neckstrap - plus it's more to squeeze into the camera bag - it's not a very comfy strap either.

The first two pics are of me doing my certification dives for my SCUBA open water certification at a quarry in Haymarket, VA. The water 35 feet down was a cool 47 degrees:scared1: !!! But the wetsuits do a great job of keeping you comfortable. In the first pic, I am the one looking at the camera.

For some reason, I do much better using SuperMacro on my S3 than regular Macro; I've been taking tons of flower pictures to try to figure out what my problem is, and danged if I know! Anyway, here's a shot of my Gallardia which are just starting to bloom. This is a real accomplishment - I've been trying to grow Gallardia for about 4 years now; I plant them in the fall, and then in the spring when they come up, the leaves look like weeds so I kept pulling them out every year!! I think I've got them figured out now, though.
