Canon S3

I bought an S3 about a month ago. Haven't taken any night pics yet, but everything else worked real well, especially all my foliage shots.

Canon S3 is $319 and some odd cents right now at Dell, with free shipping!!!!!

I just bought it and am very satified. Here is a link to my thread so that can see "straight out of the box" pictures. http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1251752

The pic with the panda with her paws to her face was taken with her VERY
far away!!! I know it isn't the greatest pic, but the distance was unbelievable and with practice I'm sure I could do better.

Whatever camera you buy, have fun with it!!!

Sharon, thanks for the advice. I actually purchased an S3 Sunday night on Dell.com only to find out after I purchased it - it wouldn't ship for 2 weeks... I'm leaving Thursday night - so that wouldn't work for me... I ended up with the Sony. The UI is actually quite similar to my Sony T9 so so far it's been really easy for me to learn (only toyed with it for about 10 minutes last night).

I loved your pictures... Close up pictures like yours are exactly why I bought a 12X optical zoom... If my pictures turn out even close to as good as yours I will be very happy... Thanks again.

I have the H5. You'll like the H2. The only difference between the two is the MP, which won't make much of a difference, and the LCD.

Amy, macro is the next mode I want to try. I slacked off for a few days, but when I get back to it, that's next. And I WILL read the book for that one. ;) Updated thread title with new date for you. Thanks for adding more pictures. :teeth: You still have flowers? Mine are pretty much dead from frost. I'll have to look for some. lol

Well, just like so many others on this board (so it seems), my wife and I are the proud new owners of a shiny Canon S3-IS. We took it for a test drive over the weekend at the UGA-Mississippi State game, which also happened to be my first ever college football experience, and I needed somewhere to show them off ;)

There are also the obligatory cat photos, courtesy of my wife. Unfortunately, they're better than my football shots are, so I'd better throw them in! I am sure we'll be having lots of fun test-driving our new gadget out so perhaps we'll have some nice shots to enter into the Disney photo contests, should they continue next year :artist:

Apologies to folks on dial-up - but these images are fairly small in size and hopefully should not take too long to load.

Here's a nice close-up of the Georgia team busting through the banner at the end of the players' race:

And a panorama of the stadium (don't worry about the dodgy stitching!):

A lovely portrait of one of our furballs, Sebastian, on his favourite perch:

Finally, my brat Chloe:

Congrats on your purchase. Fun to use, isn't it! I'm just hoping it's nice this weekend so that I can get out and take some nice fall pics with my S3.

BTW, I have a Siamese too!

Thanks for posting.

But, I would return your camera. Something must be wrong with it? Seems it looks like everyone is wearing RED. ????? ;) lol

Cool panorama! Haven't tried that yet.

BTW, did you get any or alot of green possessed cat eye photos? My Splash has green eyes, & I seem to get "green glowing eyes" in her shots if AF on & red-eye flash on. I've started aiming the AF spots above her head to eliminate this, then cropping the photo to center her.

All prior Olympus cameras in red eye mode would pre-flash, then take photo again with flash. It was all done quickly, but enough time in between that you could obviously tell. You almost had to warn people not to move after the first flash, & wait for it to take the shot.

With this Canon S3, there doesn't seem to be any "pre-flash"...or if there is, its so quick to shot time, impossible to tell.

Just wondering if you were experiencing "green eye" with Chloe since she has green eyes too.

Ya mean like this :teeth:

Everyone, meet Screech :wave2:

yeah, but mine are big "glow in the dark" green eyes, I think because she has green eyes. Not really experiencing red eye so much.

I'll just have to start framing my cat pics differently. That was the first pic that I took with this camera.

I don't think all that red is going anywhere, we'll have to get used to it here in Georgia ;)

The panorama was actually stitched with the program on the CD - I haven't had enough time with the camera to figure out the auto stitch function but I imagine it works in a pretty similar manner.

I can't speak for the green-eye problem - I haven't used the camera enough! I noticed that some of the shots of Sebastian were very red-eyed, and he has blue eyes. We just need to familiarise ourselves more with the camera to try and eradicate that. If I come across any green-eye problems I'll see if I can post them and figure out what the problem is.

I posted the below info the other day, but was just wondering how others with green eyed cats were making out. Thanks.

I found a solution or a way to work around all the "green eye" I was getting on kitty Splash's photos.

I don't frame the picture exactly has I want it. Instead, I zoom out some, keeping her in the center (left & right), but I focus on just above her. Then, I can crop the photo to just the way I wanted it on the computer.

I was finding that when focusing right on her face, the green AF spots shining on her face would turn her eyes green even before I took the shot. But if I aim those AF green spots elsewhere, her eyes weren't green before or during the shot. Make sense?

I was doing this in Auto, with flash obviously, & with AF (green spots) on. She happens to have green eyes...so I don't know if this was causing all the green possessed looking eyes in her photos.

Going to keep experimenting with this....but at least there is some hope.

I actually did read your post. I just haven't taken and kitty pics since then. Next time I do, I will put this advice into practice :thumbsup2 .

I bet Screech has beautiful blue eyes. :goodvibes

Sebastian is a beauty too.

I grew up with Siamese & Hymalians, now just Splash.

Yup, she turned 18 this month. When ever we go to the vet, & if its someone who hasn't seen her before, they start examing her, then look at chart, & go WOW..."I thought she was like 13". They also ask is she really 18? lol She's got kidney disease, but doing really well with IV fluids we give her every other day. And we work hard at keeping her appetite up. She's a talker - sounds a bit siamese, but she's not. And she still LOVES to play with her toys with us.

Oh...and I always forget this. She's deaf now - broken ear drums from an infection. I still talk to her & yell at her like she can hear me though. lol

I also just got the H5, and so far love it..

Hello-- I am the roger_ramjet's wife.... the one who took the cat pics in the OP. :wave2:

I've decided that cats are the hardest things to photograph EVER. For one thing, they (at least mine) never sit still long enough to get a clear shot. And, once they do, the red eye (and the green eye with Chloe) always shows up.

The only solution I've found so far is just to not use flash at all. The one I took of Sebastian in the OP was used with the indoor scene setting, no flash. I used auto for Chloe since there was moderate light coming in on the screen porch.

I used to have an old camera with the pre-flash function, and I'd still end up with creepy glowing cat eyes in all my pictures. I think their eyes are just too luminous--much more than humans.

I will try the technique described earlier and see how it goes, though!

Great pictures.... everyone!

I have joined the fold and just got an S3. Leaving for WDW in a dozen days! Looking forward to playing with it down there.

Any thoughts, tips, ideas, etc to get the most out of the camera?

Thanks...
