That's one I've been looking at. This may answer my thread question. Thanks! What's the difference between this one and the EOS Rebel T3? Which would be better for a novice?

The XS is practically a dinosaur if buying new. It came out in '08. I would not put that much money towards something that old. The technology in cameras changes at least once a year if not sooner, so it is significantly less capable than a current generation camera. That said, all DSLRs are capable of nice images, but you miss out on things like higher quality images at higher ISOs. It just seems overpriced to me at $400.

That model is probably more capable than the original Rebel I bought in 04 for almost $1K.

That said however, I would not buy that model. I'm thinking it doesn't have the expanded ISO you can get even on the entry level T3. That's the minimum I would go for. The T2i is what I have and I'd recommend that to anyone, even if it meant saving a little longer.

IMO $399 is not the good deal it sounds like for an XS at this point in time. Not when you can find the T3 for less than $100 more. The T3 will give you MUCH better ISO range and performance.

Also, the XS stepped down from the Rebels before it. Canon made a sub-class to compete with Nikon's D40. I've got a friend who shoots with one and after using hers a couple of times I'd take my old Rebel XT over it any day as far as IQ and ISO performance goes.

If you are set on Canon, that is fine, but I would at least consider other brands that might give more for your money. I normally suggest my favorite Pentax, but their entry level (K-r) seems to be out of stock everywhere. I suspect they are replacing it soon. The Sony A390 and A33 are good options.

You might look into the T2i as its a slightly older model but just as good as the T3i and more MP than the T3. Probably one of the best values out there.

I'll agree with the others, it's not really a good deal (less at the Canon store) and the old (2008) XS/1000D is limited in features.

For a starter/beginner DSLR in the Canon line the T2i/550D is better but more expensive, $550 with 18-55IS lens
