I just recently ordered the Canon Rebel T3. (it should be here this week)

After I had already ordered it I started to worry that maybe I should have gone with the Rebel T3i.

I have been looking into upgrading from my Point and Shoot for some time now but just havent had the money to do so, so when I found a camera that I could pay off in "6 easy payments" I was ecstatic!

Now my reason for questioning my decision is the mega pixels. My point and shoot is 10.1 MP, the Rebel T3 is 12.2, and the Rebel T3i is 18 MP.

My question is should I have went with the T3i instead of the T3?

Or should I just not worry about the MP?

Does anyone have either of those cameras? Or just general advice?

Thank you! :goodvibes

MPs is the least important thing to worry about there. My backup old 6MP K100d still creates incredible images. However, if I remember correctly (not a Canon person), the sensor on the T3i is their best APS-C sensor and gives better high ISO performance than the T3. It shouldn't make too much of a difference in most situations though, just in really low light.

Well low light and night photos is probably the main reason I needed to upgrade...guess I forgot to mention that above.

So basically I shouldnt worry about the MP then? Well thats good to know.

Thank you!

I agree I wouldn't worry too much about the MP. However, my DH just gave me the T3i for Christmas and I gotta say I LOVE THIS CAMERA! My old camera was a Canon Digital Rebel 6.2 MP, a very nice camera and I really have no complaints, but the detail in the pics from my new camera is quite amazing. I love the many new features, especially the view finder being adjustable. Not sure what the price difference is between the two models are, but if its in your budget I'd go with the T3i. Otherwise, I'm sure you will still be very happy with your T3 ..as I believe Canon makes an excellent camera! Enjoy!

Its going to be all about the features of the camera. Its the old axiom, "You get what you pay for." The T3 is Canon's entry level DSLR camera and the T3i
is one of their more recent releases. You can compare the two side-by-side at dpreview.com, which if you are questioning your purchase, I would do. I'm not a Canon shooter, but the T3i has Canon's newest APS-C sensor, articulating screen, higher usable ISO, etc. Again, the mega-pixel is the least of the concerns.

I'm always of the opinion that you should purchase a camera beyond your current skills so you can grow into it. It may save you from having to upgrade sooner than you want. That's just my opinion.

I also just ordered the T3 with a slightly different package than you. My 2nd lens is different a slightly better one from what I understand but I couldn't justify $300 more right now for the T3i since I haven't used an SLR in over 20 years. I am planning on learning on this, giving it to my dd, and upgrading next year.

After "downgrading" from a Canon 30D to a Rebel Xsi over three years ago I have rarely felt that the camera was limiting my photography. After recently going to another entry level camera (Panasonic G3) the results are about the same. My experience with SLRs goes back about 40 years and although some fancy features may make some photographic situations easier the most basic SLRs can be set to just about any setting that the more advanced ones can. The limiting factor is usually us. ;)

One thing I missed on the Rebel was the ability to bracket more than three images for HDR, something Canon's higher Rebel and xxD models do not have either. Since getting a camera with the fold out LCD I do appreciate this feature but mainly use it only for tripod work. The T3 does not have a spot meter which is nice for spotlit shows but not necessary.

The T3 is a very capable camera. Don't worry about the megapixels. 12 is more than enough. Heck, 8 is more than enough really. Sure, the T3i has more features, but the T3 does have everything you need to make great images.

On low light photos... knowing how to use the camera will make more of a difference here than the ISO gain you'll get between the T3 and T3i. But then again, with a little know how you can get some great low light shots with most current model point and shoots.

I agree and not worry about the megapixels, but ......
The other models in the Canon Rebel line T3i (600D), T2i (550D) have a slightly different set of features which makes them a better choice for some
