Hello All!
I am looking for some opinions on my upcoming camera purchase...

I would like to purchase a new camera for our trip to Disney in a few weeks. I have NO photography experience and as I read through these threads I get soooo lost. :lmao: I was looking at the canon sx110is...I am not ready for a SLR AT ALL!! I thought that this would be a good camera to help me get some quality shots, while not wasting my vacation trying to figure out how to work my camera! :rotfl: I am definitely a p & s kind of girl...but I am tired of the grainy photo from my cheap camera that I already have.

So help me out here...do you think that this would be a good camera for a beginner. It is in my price range. And I think that it will offer me the opportunity to gain more experience with photography.

TIA!
:) Stephanie

I don't know what camera you have, but a new p&s might not help with grainy photos. It might be the limitations of that camera type causing your problems. FWIW, all entry level DSLRs have auto modes. To me, it sounds like they best thing to do would be to learn more about photography. Remember, a good photographer can use a lousy camera to capture incredible shots and a bad one can use a $5k camera and get horrible shots.

Thanks for your reply...I know that I need to learn more about photography...that is not a question. However I wouldnt even know where to begin. I now that I am not ready for a DSRL, however after looking into the Canon sx110, I thought that it would be a more advanced P & S and would help me as I start to learn more about photography. I was trying to get feedback from anyone that may have experience with that camera to let me know if it would be a good investment.

I appreciate your feedback. Thanks!

I would still love to get more replies...

While philosophically I agree with ukcatfan, I understand what you are saying. Basically you want good photos from your trip to WDW and later the chance to learn more about taking good photos.

I think you want a camera that takes good/great photos in Auto mode but also offers other modes for fireworks, night scenes, etc. and eventually the opportunity to try changing the settings yourself.

I'm a big supporter of the Canon G series, more expensive but excellent results on Auto with lots of room to grow. Or try the cheaper SX10 IS which a friend of mine has and is totally satisfied with as his first digital camera. Either of these cameras will be great for WDW and with little practice give you good Disney pictures.

Buying a dSLR is a good idea if you are serious about learning photography and software. I made the move to a dSLR late in my photography experience but I was more than ready having spent hours learning about my Canon G5, G9 and editing photos and taking pictures in RAW etc.

Others make the move directly to a dSLR and learn from the beginning as ukcatfan suggested. You are the only person who can decide!

We just purchased the sx10 is and I am the same way. I am totally clueless about cameras and pitcure taking. We are going to WDW in less than a week. I have learned alot about ISO, shutter speed, and aperture in a short period of time and with the canon sx 10 is I am able to take good pitcures. I have been taking hundreds of shots the last week and this camera is great. I have been reading Mark's thread about pitcure taking and that has help alot as well.

Thanks for youe input. This gives me some hope. I will have to check out Marks thread...would you mind posting the link. I think that I am going to stick with the sx110...a little less advanced than the sx10 also more in my price range. we'll see though.

I have to add a little input here.

While my budget says I can only get a $350 camera, I have to admit that my mind says it is wiser to wait, pull together the extra $150 and get a camera that is higher quality and will last longer (and allow me to really learn photography!) and get the G10.

My reasoning is that if I am looking at the $350 camera to get by until I can afford a more advanced camera, then in the long run I have spent $350 plus another $500, making that investment $850 rather than the $500 to just get the one I really want/need in the first place.

Does that make sense?

I bought it a few months ago and just love it! I'm still learning some of the settings. If I could figure out how to post pictures I would post some from our vacation a few weeks ago to the Jersey shore, lol.

My wife has that camera- I think it's a lot of fun. She traded her D40 in on it because she wanted something small and simple. It does pretty good video also. Here is something I posted back in February.

Was a nice day on Saturday- thought I would share a few pictures. All taken with my wife's new Canon PowerShot SX110 IS- who needs a DSLR anyway?

I have the Canon SX100 and I absolutely love it. It takes great pictures. I usually keep it on auto and the pictures still come out great. Good luck with your decision.

Nothing against the camera, but Jeff is one of the best on here, so please do not think that your shots are going to automatically look like his. I do think it is going to be a good camera though. I hardly use it anymore, but still have my Canon S2 IS, which is like the great great great grandfather of this camera. :lmao:

I just looked at his Flickr account.....yeah, you are right!

I have SO MUCH to learn!

Are you looking at the 9 megapixel or the 10 megapixel?

Anyone know if there is much difference between the 2 other than the megapixel?

I did check his flikr acct and he is VERY talented...I am sure my photos won't look the same as his...but I can see the the camera definitely has potential. I know that I have a lot to learn about photography, now I have found a place to get good information and ideas from.
