Canon PowerShot SX100 IS

Okay, so this is the camera I went with about 6 months ago... It was a cost vs. well thats be honest cost thing.....

Took the camera to Disney in April, fast forward to going back this Sept. I really could use some help in the understanding this camera and getting better pictures...

My downfalls:

Parades that are moving
Night-time
Indoor rides....

Here are a few examples: (Please note I am not a great photographer. I have a bad neck injury and am prone to shake a bit if the camera is focusing above my shoulers). Thanks for any help you can give me.. I am willing to practice every day to get this right.

These types of shots are always challenging - even for the best photographer with the nicest equipment.

You may be able to improve your photos somewhat with studying and practice. Try picking up a copy of Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson, which will help you understand the relationship between light, movement, shutter speed, etc. Also, hang around here and you'll learn a lot.

Tinker'n'fun.... I just bought the same camera a little over a month ago because of the rave reviews it got on Circuitcity.com.... can I just say I HATE this 'toopid camera!!!?!?!?!?

My photos are similar to yours-no matter what setting I use, I can't capture anything in motion. I can't do close ups with the macro setting-it's all blurry.... I actually posted a couple of weeks ago for suggestions on how to make the pictures better and one suggestion for the zoom was to turn off the digital zoom and just shoot optical. I tried it and the quality still stinks

My main camera is a Nikon D50 (SLR), so I'm spoiled in the crisp quality that an SLR gives....I like to have a camera to put in my purse when I just don't want to lug my D50 with me. Believe it or not, my little Kodak Easyshare 4megapixel that is 5 yrs old takes MUCH BETTER pictures than my Canon SX100!!! I bought a "new" PnS hoping for even better quality/perks than my old Kodak... I was very, very wrong!!!!! Now I'm out $240 for a camera I HATE!!!!

I'll be following your thread in hopes of getting some pointers/advise as well!!! Good luck and I hope there's a way to get some better photos!!!!

My daughter has my old camera which I "thought" needed to be updated. Needless to say her pics are better than mine. I am going to start creeping out the neighbors and try doing the action pics on them... Plus if they call the police I can always try to get a pic of the flashing lights on top of the patrol car!!

Thank you for the suggestion. I need a get away from the kids night, so I may just go and read the book at Borders, have come coffee, and take notes.

I have this camera and love it. My shots are crisp and clear. I think for a P&S camera it is a good buy. I bought it as a secondary to my Rebel XTI. I also have the Canon Pro 1, the G6, and my DH has the S3IS. I like it for its zoom. Is it my favorite, no and it did take some time for me to work with it to get the shots to look better. I am one that likes to look through a view finder and with this one not having one...can I say it was quite a challenge to learn to use it.

Keep working with it and I think you will find that you will be able to get some great shots. I am planning on taking it to Disney in 3 weeks. I would love to take my Rebel but DH is not going and I will have my hands full keeping up with the kids and trying to hold the Rebel.

I bought this one about a month ago also and love love LOVE it. No problems with macro, distance, motion, nothing. I have another P&S that I also love (Olympus Stylus 820) and my hobby--when $$ and circumstances permit--has been taking shots during concerts, probably 90% of which I've been thrilled with. However, after seeing shots a friend got under identical circumstances using the SX 100 IS, I had to have it. I'll be going to see the Foo Fighters in Vegas at the end of September and am SO looking forward to using it there (though, TBH, I'll probably drag the Olympus with me, too, just in case.)

These are a few I got with the Canon...

(disregard the blurriness at the bottom....I had a blasted fingerprint on the lens which I couldn't see until it was too late because I was in bright sunlight)
