Hey everyone, not sure if this was posted, but I've seen a lot of threads lately from people thinking about purchasing Canon DSLR gear. If you're not aware, Canon has the following rebates in effect through July.

Please make sure you're aware of these rebates! A lot of places *cough* Best Buy *cough* are slashing the price only slightly and making you think you're getting a great deal, and then pocketing the manufacturer rebate themselves. These rebates (esp. the combo kits) are in effect everywhere; I've found personally that Amazon has the best prices and will knock the rebate amount off of your total when you're checking out and in the payment page.

Anyways, I just wanted to share and try to save some DISers a few bucks!

I got really excited when I first heard the message...but then canon pulled something really sneaky:sad2: Here's what I mean, the 70-200 f2.8 IS for example has a wonderful $200 rebate or does it? About the same time they also increased the cost of the lens making it $100 higher (check B & H). This makes the rebates only worth half the amount and the kicker is that when the rebate ends, the lens will still be $100 higher.

If you are interested in the rebates, do some checking around to see if you might be lucky enough to find somebody who hasn't increased their prices yet...but you'd better hurry!

All the lens companies have raised their prices though because of the global economic situation, various bancruptcies f companies like Circuit City and Ritz, and the value of the Yen to the dollar. :( Sad all the way around. And you betcha they probably won't be dropping the prices any time soon.:sad1:

I am eyeing the 580ex II. Maybe for father's day.

Hi Penquin!

Thanks for the heads up regarding the Cannon Rebates. I did go to the Cannon website and they do have pdf downloads for the coupon/rebate. But I'm still not sure how this works.

I checked Walmart which has the Canon XSI for $699.00, Ritz, $759 but NO TAX and Amazon $699.00. When I checked out of Amazon though it did not prompt me for the rebate discount. On the other hand if I buy at Ritz would they "honor" the rebate or is this something I'm going to have to mail in.

THanks!!!

Brunette

Hey Brunette!

The rebates are actually instant rebates. The one for the XSi is a combo, you need to purchase the XSi kit and the 55-250mm IS lens (an excellent starter telephoto.)

If you buy on Amazon, add both to your cart. Here's a tip: when you buy your lens, make sure you're the one you're adding is actually sold by Amazon, and not one of their third party partners. It'll show the full price until the second to last page, when you're actually about to pay, then it should look something like this:

Items: $954.95
Shipping & Handling: $8.53
Promotion Applied: -$200.00

Total Before Tax: $763.48
Estimated Tax: $0.00
Order Total: $763.48

Of course, you could subtract $8.53 for free shipping. :)

The combo only applies if you buy the combo, but you're essentially getting an excellent 55-250mm telephoto for only 50 bucks more, which is a great deal!

will bestbuy actually honor it? I called and they have the camera and lens in stock but he said no to the discount and the price for the 2 was higher than listed on the rebate.

Best Buy "kind of" honors it. They don't tell you it's a rebate; I noticed in the ad last week that they had the combo listed together + a bag for 849 or 859 or some sort. I think it's shady; they're essentially forcing you to buy the bag (for 110 more!) to get the rebate. Some retailers also don't pass along the rebate; since it's instant, they're keeping it for themselves.

Just be aware of that when you shop!
