Tonight I set up my camera on the tripod set it to manual to take some pictures to check sharpness of lenses.
The shutter would not release. My exposure was correct, then it would flash a light on the right corner.
I flipped to manual focus and it shot the photo. I then switch back to auto focus and it took.
I had this happen with both my Sigma lens and with my Canon lens.
I was trying to release the shutter with a new 3 pin cable release. At first I tried both the cable release and the shutter button.
Possible camera problem, or am I just having a duh moment ?

Thank you in advance for everyone's time with this.

I had this problem with my 50D but not so much when using my 5D Mark III. When shooting in manual and in very low light situations finding focus, locking focus, and shutter time all become problems. I believe it is a combo of a long shutter frame stalling out and or lack of finding focus.

I may be misunderstanding. Is there enough light for AF system to work?

I thought there was, as I had light above the table, a candle lit on the table, and just about every other light on in the kitchen. So maybe found a limitation to my camera' capability.

So in viewfinder you are getting the focus square lit in red with the green indicator off to the right in green confirming in focus? You in single shot AF?

Yes I was getting the lit red square, and the green indicator to the right, and in single shot AF. So when it first did it I was kinda confused.

Ok, so when you continue to press shutter button all the way down, nothing happens? Or can you hear the mirror slap up?

That's odd. I would try removing AF as a function of the shutter release button and see if that works. Look in your manual as to how to activate back button focusing. I believe you have an AF-ON button that can be used to focus. You need to go into your custom button/function settings

strange, so it appears you're locked focus but nothing happens ... are you too close? maybe accidentally activated back button focus

Seems bob100 had the winning answer. I had a duh moment and forgot I had turned on the back focus to practice with that over the holidays taking photo's of the nephews at Christmas. Never turned it off. Thank you all for the help. Now to go outside and practice practice practice.
