Either 24-70L 2.8 which is cropped at 38mm

17-55mm 2.8 ef-s

Both are good zoom lens but if you have the budget the Canon 17-55IS is the better choice for a crop model like the 60D. Of course there are other fine choices, e.g. Sigma 17-50 2.8 or Tamron 17-50 2.8 or Sigma 17-70 2.8 or primes like the Canon 28mm 1.8 or Sigma 30mm 1.4 or the .....

It comes down to your style. They're both good lenses, but I'd go with the 24-70 myself between those. But that's solely because I like the focal range. I don't think you can go wrong with either of them.

Don't worry about what they're cropped to. The crop factor will affect both lenses if you wanted to find the 35mm field of view equivalent. Unless you switch back and forth from FF or 35mm to crop it's not really going to affect you. You know what 24mm is like on your crop camera, why worry what it's like in a format you're not currently using?

Yeah I agree but IT will be hard to start at 38mm to get full family shots without standing further back. I think I will wait till I get back and try renting one to see if I like it.

Renting is never a bad idea when you're talking about spending a grand on a lens. You are only talking about an 11mm difference between the two. It really isn't all that much. It's like 2 or 3 steps back to get the same shot.

I use a 28-105 as my walkaround on my crop camera. I never have any problems getting my whole family in the shot. I never felt like it was tough to get what I wanted anytime during my last two trips. But we all shoot differently and you have to find what fits you.
