My Canon 50 mm 1.8 lens stopped focusing properly on two occasions in the heat. It gets hot here in the desert and doing and summer temps can be 100 easily. It's a dry heat. I was at my sons soccer game and when soon as it got hot the lens started malfunctioning. I even was keeping it in the shade. Once it cooled down it stated working again. Is this a common phenomenon with lenses? Thanks! :)

They do have an operating temperature range in the manual. I've never had this happen with mine though.

This lens is all plastic. It's gears are flimsy and strip really easily. Maybe the design of the gears is contributing to your problems? Perhaps the heat is causing things to expand or shift enough so that they cannot work?

Also keep in mind that your camera's sensor is sensitive to extreme heat. I have run into that problem.

I've never had that problem with the 50mm 1.8
But it is a $50 lens so it doesn't have the best build, AF, etc., so I suppose heat could be a factor
