I can't decide which digi camera I want. I've narrowed it down to the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H5 or the Canon PowerShot S3 IS. Does anyone have any comments on either one. Or can anyone suggest a better selection?

after spending a whole week playing with Sony H5, I'm going to list the pros and cons of this camera.

Sony H5

PROs:
1. 7.2 MP
2. Larger LCD screen
3. 58mm adapter ring included
4. Heavier than S3 (whether this is a PRO or CON is subjective)
5. Rechargeable battery included

CONs:
1. more expensive than the S3 (about US$100 more in Canada)
2. Uses proprietary MS Pro / Duo memory card
3. Far less scene modes than the S3
4. Heavier than S3 (whether this is a PRO or CON is subjective)
5. Overly-strong noise reduction even at ISO 80 (this is SUPER BAD)
6. Very soft picture (S3 is much-much sharper) even at the lowest ISO

There you go.

Cannon? I say use the Cannon to shoot the Sony, then buy a Canon camera.

Hi, we actually had a Canon Powershot A40 and were happy with the quality of the pictures. However the camera is just too slow and has the delay from when you press the button to take the pictures. Plus we found the battery life to be extremely terrible, it uses 4 AA and goes through them so quickly.'

Now we have replaced it with the Sony DSC-H1 and not only is the battery life far superior but the quality is even better and the zoom is amazing. It also has the stabilizer for windy conditions, etc.

Hope this helps...

can't really compare between the two. They are from different generations (the Canon, at the time, uses a slower processor) and different price range (it may be the same price range, but you're comparing older generation price range vs newer generation price range, which is invalid).

Don't get me wrong, the Sony is a very capable camera, but Canon is more capable than Sony.

One additional comment: For 'AA' battery cameras, I highly recommend picking up a set of Eveready NiMH rechargable batteries. You can find the 2500 mAH batteries (in packs of 4) at Target and WalMart for under $10 and as sets with the appropriate charger for under $20. These suckers will blow away any standard Energiser or Duracell as far as life goes. I purchased 2 four packs plus a charger for under $28 -- which was cheaper than one set of the Canon branded batteries.
