Cannon Lens Question

Heading the World in 5 weeks....hoowoo! I have a Cannon Rebel xsi. I have three lens; the standard 18-55mm, efs 55-250mm, and my current favorite the nifty fifty. I am toying with renting another lens for the trip as we are staying at CR, with a Magic Kingdom view, and I plan on going out solo to shoot while DD20months is napping or in bed.

Any thoughts on what I should rent? My wife's cousin let me play with his Canon 100-400L in DC last year and I had fun shoot the Capitol with it. (Since I just said I was shooting the Capitol I expect to be hauled away shortly lol.) Or am I fine and I should be okay with what I have?

Wide angle lenses are a lot of fun in the World. Check out the Ultra Wide Angle thread in this forum for some inspiration. The Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 is a great choice!

I just picked up the Canon 10-22 for my 7D. So far I'm enjoying it, but have a lot to learn! I too think a ultra wide angle would be more fun at WDW, and a lot easier to lug around than the 100-400. The 100-400 would be good for shows (ie I used my mainly for shots of Mickey @ Fantasmic). Like mom 2trk said, check out the Ultra Wide thread for some amazing shots around WDW and other places. It's what convinced me to pick up the 10-22!

You might use the tele zoom at AK, but the rest of the parks scream out for a ultra wide. The other option is to get any lens that is really, really fast. Imagine a zoom that is say f2.8 through the whole range. Then you might have a chance at the actors in the live shows, even indoors.

I would go ultra wide. It is easier than backing up and hoping for the crowds to part.

I would love to tour the parks with a 2.8 zoom. Many do and post great shots here. But do keep in mind that those are pretty heavy to cart around. That's just another reason to go wide in my book! But there are lockers if you want to bring some heavy gear.

I'm also a fan of the 2.8 zooms but to the OP - I wouldn't bother renting anything, you'll get plenty of good pics with what you have.

OK imho you will use your 18-55mm the majority of the time. It is plenty wide enough for most Disney shots. Use your feet if not wide enough. LOL Next your
55-250mm will come in handy at AK. Other than that maybe distant shots of fireworks. Your 50mm prime will be great at night. There again, if not wide enough back up. Hope this helps. My personal choice is a canon 17-55mm f/2.8. Pricey though but you said maybe renting.

I love this one too. I was really back and forth on it when I was looking to upgrade last year, but I am glad I did.

Borrowlenses dot com tends to give a 25% discount on a lens each week. I think I'll see what the discount is on and go with that.

Zoom in yes, zoom out no. Stepping backwards can often introduce random people into your shot. Ok if that is what you are looking for but needless foreground clutter if not.

Also remember that at the short end a mm or 2 makes a big difference. My sigma 10-20 has an angle of view from 103 - 63 degrees. The lens sounds unimpressive with only a 10 mm range, but it is a large amount of creative control. I bought it on a whim, for manhatten, since the buildings are so close together. Turns out to be one of my absolute favorite travel lenses.

I've done 3 trips with my 17-55 f2.8 on a 7d and it isn't that bad. In July it got pretty annoying cause it was so humid and hot but the other times and at night it was fine. Deff more weight and the kit lens. When I didn't feel like carrying it I put my wife's 18-125 f4 on. I really like that lens for outdoors. It isn't the fastest af lens outvthere but icthink it produces some sharp pics.

I'm going to dive in and get the 70-200 f2.8 finally for our nov trip. I have wanted this for 3 years now. Carrying it around might be another story. I was using a friends f4 the other day cause she didn't have her 2.8 with her and it wasn't bad. She said the 2.8 isn't much diff with weight. This was also on a 7d.

I also got to shoot her markII. Holy crap that thing is heavy. I would never be able to carry that around all day in the park. Never!

10-22 for sure. I rent it every year on my regular pilgrimage to Disneyland or WDW. I should have just paid for it buy now.
