Crud.

I have loved my Cannon Powershot (SD880 IS Digital Elph). Loved it. Recommended it to others. It's been about 13 months since we got it. Ugh. The lens is protruding and stuck. I was taking pictures and all of a sudden I got a, "lens error, restart camera" message at the bottom of the screen. The camera will not restart. The lens will not retract. Darn it.

I've researched the problem some and have found that a number of others have had this problem. Has anyone here experienced it? If so, were you able to fix it, or did you have it repaired? I read that the repair can be costly (one quote was about 1/2 the cost of the camera) and the problem can crop up again.

Luckily I have a back up camera, but it looks like if I can't get this problem fixed I'll be in the market for another. Drat.

Thoughts?

you can call Canon service and ask them. they'll quote you the lowest price it will cost to fix it if no parts are needed. if it's happened to others they should be able to tell you what is wrong. however if you want to fix it, i'd send it to KEH since they are cheaper and give you a final estimated cost to repair for free.

Canon charges you the initial estimate price before they will even open it up. If that's all that's wrong, they fix it for that price but if it's anything else it will be more. the initial charge is only refunded if you pay for the more expensive repair. other wise, if you don't get it repaired after they send you the second estimate you lose the original estimated price you paid. hence why i would go to KEH if they fix those cameras.

Give Canon a call and ask about the Loyalty Program. It allows you to trade in your broken Canon camera for a new (refurb/overstock) model for a reduced fee. In many cases, the fee is less than fixing the old camera.

See here for more details. It's a really long thread, but the pertinent info is on page 1, and the last few pages. http://www.fatwallet.com/forums/hot-deals/849344/?start=1300

Thanks! :) Not sure what I'll do at this point. I'm using an old Cannon I had prior to this incident. Too much going on with the ramp up of school starting. :upsidedow

I didn't know about the Loyalty Program! Thanks for the info. and the link. :) I'll investigate. I'll need to do something fairly soon. The camera as it is is useless now. I'd like to fix or replace it.
