Canned Pumpkin...

It sure does! It also works well if your dog has diarrhea. The wonders of pumpkin.:rotfl:

My vet actually suggested that I give it to my cat for constipation problems. She ate it for a few weeks, and then decided to get picky and not touch it. It did seem to work while she was eating it.

Where are you finding canned pumpkin? I can't find in any grocery store in a 100 mile radius of where I live. All I see are signs that say "temporarily out of stock." I understand that there was some sort of pumpkin shortage last year.

I had bought several cans of organic canned pumpkin at Thanksgiving. Didn't use them all. I surfed the net for a "cure" for my dog last night and I found I had it on hand. Fed it to her last night and had a disaster this morning.

How can pumpkin work for constipation AND diarrhea?

My vet suggested it too, as what she's eating is too dry & cloggy for her. She's allergic to fish & something else we haven't pinpointed, so I can't can't feed her a lot of different cat foods. I haven't tried the pumpkin remedy yet. I was told if I do feed her pumpkin to only give her a spoonful.

I gave my dog 1/2 cup last night. Stupid, I know. She's eaten it before but I probably didn't give her that much. Well, the constipation is cured for now.

Think of it as, her system is well cleaned out for now. :scared: Humans pay a lot for a colonic. :upsidedow

I have a dog with pancreatic issues and this is his "treat". He gets 1/2 teaspoon every morning at 3am. I've heard about this shortage but we haven't had any problems getting it here at our local stores.

1/2 CUP???? :scared1:

Oh my. I gave my kitty maybe a TEASPOON with wet food, and THAT worked exceedingly well for constipation.

I can only imagine what a 1/2 CUP did! Yikes! :rotfl:

The vet recommended canned pumpkin for our golden who ate a sock....lo and behold it did arrive safely out the back end. Unfortunately he had to have surgery anyway for deyhdration that caused a fecal mass. :( This was just last week...and he's only 11 mo old.

Another note---had to get pumpkin from my mom and a friend who had it on their shelves. None here in Ohio either.

Now I'm starting to worry about my doggy.

Yesterday she kept straining and not much was coming out; hence, the conclusion that she was constipated. So the pumpkin cleaned her out--once in the middle of the night (big blow out) and then again during the day while I was at work.

Now she's back to going out in the yard and straining again but nothing is happening. She's almost 10 years old and I start worrying about bad stuff.

You might have to change her diet. She might not be able to eat the same old stuff anymore. :(

We give our dog about 2 tablespoons every morning and every evening. FWIW - he is about 75 punds. He is also older, and was having problems with his anal glands. Pumpkin is a whole lot cheaper than a vet bill every 3 or 4 months.

Now...about this pumpkin shortage. I hoarded about 40 cans when I saw the article stating that Libby wasn't going to be distributing pumpkin until about Thanksgiving. I checked about 4 stores, and found some at a local small chain of grocery stores.:thumbsup2

To the poster who said thier dog was straining...if it doesn't improve with a little pumpkin - maybe your vet should check the anal glands. It sounds "so glamourous"! Our dogs would get infected, and then would need antibiotics in addition to the vet bill. And, then follow-up visits. The pumpkin adds fiber, and helps with the glands. Our dog eats the pumpkin first, before the rest of his food.

Pumpkin has worked great for our dogs as well. We've given them quite a bit with no problems and they love it. Of course, you have to make sure it is PURE pumpkin, not a mix!!! Our vet said that giving them green beans has the same effect but our dogs would not touch them.

A few months ago, she did have an infected anal gland but there were lots of symptoms--most notably she was licking the area almost constantly. Maybe this is just the early stage of it. I'm going to watch for another day and then probably take her into the vet.
