Why don't you let them make them at the party? They're really easy, and kids have so much fun making them and adding all sorts of stuff to them (nuts, chocolate chips, sprinkles, etc.). 9 is a great age for that. DD9 had friends over last night and we made caramel apples.:goodvibes

Okay I have never made them so can you tell me what you did? What type of caramel did you use? DETAILS, DETAILS!

I vote for making caramel ones too....You can either melt brach's caramels OR... most grocery stores sell caramel sheets just for making caramel apples..then you don't have to worry about anyone getting burned...look for them in the produce area near the apples.

Brachs caramels...the recipe is on the bag, and they even come with 5 sticks!
Basically, you unwrap the caramels, put them in a pot with two tbs. water and melt them over low-med heat. Or you can use a crock pot. Dip the apples, place on buttered wax paper, sprinkle with nuts etc, and let cool. Easy!:goodvibes

Last year I bought caramel pieces by Brach - no unwrapping necessary and they melted lickety split in the microwave

I always use Granny Smith apples - make sure they are good and cold before dipping, the caramel will stick better. If they must be bagged for transport, when the caramel is dry, brush lightly with powdered sugar then they won't stick to the plastic.

I forgot to add, that they caramel is very hot, so I hold the apple stick in the pot while the kids carefully spoon the caramel over the apple using long handled spoon. So far no burns, and at 9YO, they know how to be more careful. I set all the extras in bowls near the wax paper, so as one is finished dipping they can move on to the sprinkling.

Caramel definitely!
Candy apples are fun to make (very messy) but too hard to eat.
Caramel apples are a bit messy to make, but fun especially for the nine year olds, and you can gussy them up like another poster mentioned.

.

I just bought those pieces yesterday and made them today. It was so easy. I melted the caramels on the stove. You just have to add two tablespoons of water. No unwrapping caramels and the pieces are so small that they melt quickly.

Throw the leftover pieces (if you have any) into a batch of brownies:love:

I melt the caramel in the micro in a large glass measuring cup it is the perfect shape (wide on top, narrow on the bottom) for dipping the apples

Thanks guys I will definately do this myself. :thumbsup2 It's much cheaper than ordering them.

Make sure you find out if any of the invited kids are currently wearing braces on their teeth.. If so, you will need an alternative for them.. :)

Right I was thinking about apple slices and the caramel bowls what do you think about that? If not, what would you suggest.

Maybe apple slices and a cinnamon/sugar mix they could dip them in? I know DGD could not have the candy apples or any kind of caramel (or other "sticky" things) while her braces were on..

Hopefully someone else will give you some better ideas than my pathetic ones - LOL.. Don't have my creative "thinking cap" on tonight.. ;)
