Candy around the world(Epcot WS)

How fun....a couple trips ago my girls and I decided to eat chocolates around the world. We would buy one chocolate bar from each country that we went to and rate them. We would also ask the different CMs which one their favorites were which made for a great conversation between the CMs and us . Each candy bar was rated 5 Mickey heads (really really liked) to 1 Mickey head (didn't like so much). The candy that got 5 Mickey heads was the Wonder Bar from Canada. Have fun, each country has their own unique candy and worth trying.

Slight highjack of this thread - does Japan have any of the flavored KitKats? I never remember to check when we go.

My favorite is in Germany and could be bought in other places (but I can't find). It is Toffifay. It is caramel, a hazelnut and chocolate. I have always loved them and up until about 3 yrs ago I could buy them at a local drug store. That drug store stopped stocking them and now I have to stock up at Epcot.

In England I like to get a Curly Wurly, it's like the old Marathon bars from the 70's. I also like a Flake. It's just a chocoalte bar but the chocolate is flaky, it's an odd texture but good.

Karamel Kuche Cermany - love the milk and/or dark chocolate covered sea salt caramels - I would buy one - have a bite - take it home and cut it up into little pieces - just one tiny bit of it was all the sugar I needed - LOL one caramel lasted a week!

Double ditto, love the dark chocolate sea salt caramel, omg yummmmm.

DD loved it too but also enjoyed the chocolate & caramel dipped strawberries a lot!

Each year, I collect candies from the WS and fill the Christmas stockings with candy that Santa gathers throughout his journey. My kids are older now but still love to explore their stocking treasures on. Christmas morning. Shortbread cookies from UK, whipped chocolate from Norway, chile candy from Mexico and maple mints from Canada are some favorites.

Just out of interest, how much does it cost for a Curly Wurly in EPCOT? My DH just brought home a packet of 5 which cost £1.00 but I can bet they are rather pricey at Disney!

I haven't bought one since last June, but I think they are $2.50. Pricey but good.

I'm planning on collecting chocolate bars on my next trip (in august) but I don't plan on eating them all in one day. I'm packing a small insulated lunch bag and taking some disposable ice packs with me. If I see something I like I can buy them and break open my pack to keep them from melting.

And don't forget to stop and watch Miyuki Sugimori in the Japan pavilion as she transforms lumps of rice starch into gorgeous figures. Sadly, she is no longer allowed to give away her treats, but watching her make a dragon or a panda or something else out of that glob is really fascinating!

She learned the art of candy crafting from her grandfather (or was it her great grandfather.....sorry its been a while) and is the ONLY female in the world who has been trained in the craft at a school in Japan that apparently is very picky about who they train. If I recall correctly there are only 15 artisans in the world who are certified in this art form.

Anyway...she tells you the story and jokes with the audience members as she pushes, pulls, clips and manipulates this glob of goo into something beautiful. She usually asks a child what their favorite animal is and makes this figure.......but as I said, she sadly is not allowed to give them away anymore. (but honestly, they didn't taste all that great, lol.....it was an odd fondant texture with the same sickeningly sweet taste of sugar and Crisco).

She appears at certain times each day, so check the schedule and get there a few minutes ahead of time to stake out a close viewpoint. It's a little kiosk that sits outside the entrance to the Japan store....looks abandoned until she shows up and starts pulling things out from under the table.

Did this a couple years back, it was fun collecting things from each country!

UK: Loooove the Mars bar & the flake chocolate as well.

Mexico: Not sure what it's called but it is a small bag that brings about 5 circular patty's of thin wafers & in-between is sweet dulce de leche. amazing!

Norway: Milka alpine milk cream bar

I like the Kit Kats from the UK. DH loves the Hi Chews from Japan. He was thrilled when he discovered that one of our local 7-Elevens carries one of the flavors.

Did this for the first time in May with my DD(10), a friend & her DD(10).

We didn't think of it til Norway so we missed Mexico. And we were tired by the time we got to Canada.

Norway-Stratos chocolate bar. I really loved this light airy bar.

China-Shockino Popping Candy. We got strawberry can't remember if they had other flavors. Fun packaging. I liked that it was a package of 20 small packs so we all got a taste and could easily save the rest for later.

Germany-Kinder Chocolate. 8 small wrapped bars in a box. I saw some others I think I may liked have better after I bought this one but we all enjoyed it.

Italy-Pernigotti Cremino Classico. This chocolate bar was just OK for all of us.

USA-cotton candy-a change from all the chocolate.

Japan-lots of fun things to pick from so we got a few. Can't read the name from the picture of the cotton candy with pop rocks. Thought it would be fun since we already had both before separately. The pop rocks were really strong. Strawberry Hi-Chews. We all really liked these. And a small cup like package of Hello Kitty cookies sticks with a chocolate dipping cream. The kids liked these more than I did.

UK-Flake chocolate bar. Enjoyed this light airy bar but I think I liked the Norway one a bit more but I was probably hungrier at the start of this quest.


It was really fun!

And now I know what I'm getting for a sweet treat on my next Epcot visit. Used to love the Marathon bar.

When did she stop giving them away? I know someone that was given one earlier this year.

I don't know when she stopped, but when we saw her last week, she wasn't giving them away. At the beginning of her show she specifically said she couldn't give them out.

She hasn't been giving them away for at least 3-4 years I would say. Last time I saw her giving them out was 2008. They made her stop due to health code reasons, per Disney.

Well I know that's not true. I received one myself in late '09.

We got one in August 2010, so it was at least until then. I'm bummed she doesn't give them away anymore. We have watched her for years and were so excited to finally get one.
