Candid shots of groups/crowd shots

I just got home from the A&M/Army game where we were tailgating. I took the food and 5 & under set home before the game started.

I took a lot of photos and I'm not really happy with any of them. I like the ones where people are posed but non of the candids.

Any tips on how to improve in this area? I didn't catch the 'feel' of the event at all.

Some of the random shots my 5 year old took ended up better!

I'll be at a lot of these type of events so I'd like to improve.

without seeing what you did not like..

even though it is a crowd, it helps to have an obvious subject. Something that stands out from the crowd:

Obviuosly this subject was lite beer....
