Just wondering,if after you had arranged to buy points from a DVC member, and the ressies were done, and if you couldn't make the trip, can the DVC member then cancel those ressies without incurring and fees? Thanks.
It depends entirely on the circumstances. How long is the trip from now? When is the member's use year, and would she have a chance to re-rent or use the points before the end of it?
That should all be spelled out in your agreement with the DVC owner. Some points will be close to their ending date, and wont be able to be reused. Others might be free and clear and able to be rebooked, but most owners do not give refunds, but will reschedule if available. Any ressie canceled in less than 31 days before the trip will make points pretty difficult, if not impossible to reuse.
DVC members do not incur fees for canceling ressies, but there are severe usage penalties depending upon when the ressie was canceled and the use year of the member. However, whether an individual ressie incurs penalties has no bearing on a renters ability to cancel a ressie. Cancellations of rentals, and and any refund policies, are strictly between the member and the renter. Such policies should be spelled out clearly in a rental agreement. As Diane said, most members have a no refund policy on their rentals, while some owners may work with a renter depending on circumstances and usage penalties.
As mentioned, if the ressie you are trying to cancel is less than 30 days out, the points will go in a holding account where they can only be used for a new ressie made 60 days or less before the new check in date. What this means is the DVC owner would have to find someone looking for a short notice ressie and can only "re-rent" the points if there is availability. The use year comes into effect at this point because depending on when the points "expire", the owner may or may not have time to find a ressie for someone else. It is also difficult as the timing involved gives no home resort advantage...so basically they would have to find someone looking to travel within the next 60 days that really doesn't care what resort they stay at.
You need to contact the person you are renting from immediately (if you haven't already) and see if they are willing to work with you to try and get a refund of some kind or possibly change the dates.
