Cancelling our Christmas ressie for sure - blame it on the gas

December 22, 2006 - January 1, 2007; Full hookup. Going online to cancel shortly. Hoping that a fellow DISer gets it!

DD and I are going in late August (yeah, I know, hurricanes) for free dining and mother-daughter bonding. And the high cost of fuel has even scrubbed our plans for a summer New England camping trip - although we will be going to NE anyway.

Maybe next year - if gas ever comes back down.... :confused3

Just an FYI, I just heard on our local news last night that the price of gas is expected to DROP by .75cents to $1 in November. I might do some research before cancelling your Dec. trip. Just a thought!

I agree, I would hold onto the ressie in case things change and you change your mind. Easier to cancel later down the road than try to re-book when there are no sites left. Especially so far away. Just a thought! :goodvibes

I too would wait and see where it goes, we have two reservations for June and Dec. If gas goes to $ 3.00 it would only be about 60.00 more than last year. If it reaches more than 4.00 as some are predicting we might cancel.

You should be able to cancel 5 days before and get your deposit back, so think about letting things slide right now.

Hope you don't have to cancel. New Eangland welcomes you. Where are you going? We have been in NE for 20 years, but born and raised in Bucks County. :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: :grouphug:

I heard on our news tonight that the gas prices will peak in mid-May and then go down. They did not say how much they would go down or how high they would go up. Only time will tell.

I went ahead and cancelled for Christmas. Some of you may recall I agonized about this before when DD begged to stay home for Christmas this year. I had hoped to convince her otherwise and kept the ressie just in case I was able to do so (no success so far). Above and beyond that, I knew that I had severely underestimated what our gas cost would be last year because our other trips were apparently short enough to give us 15 mpg instead of the 12 mpg we got over Christmas. So this gas price surge was just the final "sign" that Ft. Wilderness wasn't gonna happen this year.

Instead, DD and I are going to stay at Pop Century at the end of August with incredible airfare from AirTran and free dining. We plan to make the movie night we never made in December. Maybe we'll see some of you there - unless you've already packed up to go home for school. DD doesn't start 8th grade until after Labor Day.

DH is a little miffed that we are going without him, but we're taking him to New England instead a week before we go to WDW. For that one, we fly into and out of Boston (AirTran again). DD has already requested Salem and Cape Cod and Plymouth Rock. DH wants to revisit Lexington, Concord and Walden Pond (we went there 16 years ago). I want to go see the White Mountains and eat lobster. Not sure if we can do all this in a week, but we'll try. (So any advice from locals will be welcomed gratefully.)

Thanks for all the encouragement - we'll hope to camp for 2007.

Sorry you had to cancel. At least you are getting there during free dining and will have some quality mother daughter time.

Well there is talk on TV that gas could be around $5 a gal by summer. So what is the magic number to keep more people from traveling? :confused3

I love how these shortages occur just in time for the summer driving season, when folks are looking to vacation. Funny how there isn't a shortage in January. :confused3 At least not here on Long Island. Now of course the gas has gone from 2.85 in the begining of the week to $3..05 by the end of the week. My dad had a gas station for 17 years...don't tell me that the gas in the ground at my station cost anymore on Fri. than it did on Tues...it's the same delievery. They are anticipating the jump and passing it on before they even incurr the cost themselves.
We are seasonal the last two years in an upstate NY campgroud..I tell you I'm glad we've made that choice because we very likely wouldn't use the trailer much with the price of gas going the way it is.
We do hope to take it down to Disney FW in October...my thinking being that the sudden shortage and price hike will be back down after summer driving season is over. At least I'm hopeful of that. Since that does seem to be the trend given what happend last summer.
