Cancelling and possibly rebooking?

We have a trip booked Sept 26-Oct 3 of this year, but found out yesterday that our son is going to need to have surgery for a hernia. We're not sure what the OOP cost for the surgery is going to be after the insurance so we are considering cancelling our trip and rebooking later if we still have enough money left in the budget.

My question is will that be a problem if we end up rebooking? I won't have an issue with losing points will I? We are using a combinatoin of points banked from our 2011 use year and points from this year for the room and we would be rebooking for the exact same time period if that makes any difference.

What is your use year? That will be the deciding factor on whether or not you can bank this use year's points. There's no way to bank again the points from the 2011 use year, so those will have to be used within the current use year.

If I'm understanding you correctly, it sounds like you would reschedule for the next year during September/October. If that is the case, you may lose you 2011 banked points because they cannot be banked again. You could bank your current 2012 points to use with 2013 points, but the 2011 points would be gone.

Of course, knowing your UY and when you would reschedule for helps this all make more sense.

We have a February use year and we would be rebooking the same dates this year hopefully, essentially rebooking the same exact vacation as long we can scrape the budget together again. If not the exact same dates then something in December of this year at the latest. I just want to see if cancelling now is a viable option or if I should just hold onto the reservation and see how much the surgery ends up being. I am just concerned bacause I know the penalties for cancelling are more severe the closer you get to your check-in date and I don't want to end up losing the 2012 points I could have saved for cancelling before the 30 day window.

If there is a chance you will still go this, year, do NOT cancel your reservation now. Trying to get back the same reservation may prove very difficult, depending on what you have booked. You could end up having to change resorts every couple of nights, or be shut out completely. With a February UY you have until September 30th to bank your current points. You won't have any points in holding unless you cancel 30 days or closer to your check in date. I would most certainly wait until you have more info regarding your son's surgery before you cancel anything. Good luck!

Than for all the info! I guess my best bet is to hold onto our current reservation and cancel closer if we end up needing to. I just hate holding onto a room at BLT that someone else might want if we end up not going. I figured if it wouldn't be much of an issue it would be easier to cancel now/rebook if need be as we aren't very picky where we stay as long as we can get a two bedroom, but if we might get shut out or end up resort hopping that seems a bit risky!

It might be possible to rebook the same dates, but if you had to move the trip to December, that will be more difficult at the last minute. With a Feb UY, you can wait until you are closer to the 31 day mark to cancel. That means August which hopefully, you will have an idea by then what you need to do.

Good luck!

That is very sweet and thoughtful of you! Look at it this way: if you end up cancelling BLT, someone's waitlist will come through and they will be very happy. It doesn't matter if it is now or in August. I would hate for you to cancel the room now and then end up being able to go, and either having no place to stay or having to switch resorts to make it work. I hope it works out for you! :flower3:
