I just read this:

Non-Refundable Airline Tickets - Good News
I just saw this on the USAirways website:

http://www.usairways.com/about/press/nw_03_0913.htm

I think other airlines have also adopted this policy. Actually they are going back to the way they used to, you have up to a year to reschedule a flight rather than immediately

Does anyone know if you can change your flight on ATA? My niece has her honeymoon planned for next week, and her fiance had his jaw broken and has to have surgery tomorrow- the doc says no travel next week. She does not have insurance.

give ATA a call, perhaps with this unfortunate situation they have some policy for cancellation.

ATA has had a reasonable ticket rebooking policy for non-refundable tickets for some time already. Details are here . To summarize, there is a medical exception (full refund) that requires doctor's statement to qualify and a rebooking credit of the unused ticket value that encompasses a rebooking fee and has a one-year time limit to use the credit. You can always qualify for the second if your request for the first is refused.
