Cancelling a week prior; banked points

I'm trying to remember the rules. We have a reservation for later this month. If we cancel it just a week ahead of time I believe that means the points go into Holding. But these were points that I had originally banked into this use year to book a trip that I have already had to cancel. So if I'm not mistaken, if I hadn't made this newer reservation then those points would still be in Holding. And so canceling this newer reservation would just put them back into Holding as if I had never made this newer reservation.

Is that correct?

Prior status of the points doesn't matter if you cancel 30 days or less from check in. All points will go into holding and will expire (if not used) by the end of the UY in which the cancelled reservation was to take place.

Was your previous trip also cancelled 30 days or less prior to check in? If so then yes, they were in holding and you had to book this reservation 60 days or less prior to check in. They would have gone back into holding status even if you had cancelled a month ago. If it wasn't cancelled 30 days or less out for the first trip then the points would not have been in holding but they will be now if you cancel the current reservation.

No, but it was booked with banked points.

Maybe they don't go into Holding, but I still have to use them by the end of the use year, so isn't that the same as if they were in Holding?

No unless the end of your use year was within 60 days

Really? I truly don't understand the rules then. I thought that when you banked points into the next Use Year, then they HAD to be used within that Use Year, and that they couldn't be banked into the next Use Year. That's not true? I'm going to have to sit down and read the docs again because I thought that was like one of the most fundamental rules of banking and borrowing.

Banked points and reservation cancelled 31 or more days out=points must be used by end of current use year

Banked points and reservation cancelled 30 days-1 day prior to check in=points go into holding. Holding points can only be used to book an upcoming stay that is less than 60 days away. They also expire at the end of the current use year.

So I’m going to use an example of a June UY. If you had a late July reservation that you cancelled 31 or more days out you’d have until May 31 2020 to use your point with no restrictions. If you cancelled that same reservation 30 days or less you’d only be able to make a new reservation a max of 60 days in advance and you’d have to use them by May 31 2020. Getting rooms at 60 days or less can be difficult especially if your UY ends a lot sooner than my example.

Let me repeat:
Prior status of the points doesn't matter if you cancel 30 days or less from check in. All points will go into holding and will expire (if not used) by the end of the UY in which the cancelled reservation was to take place.

Yes, both banks points and holding points need to be used by the end of the UY or they expire. But banked points can be used to book any available days in that UY whether it is tomorrow or 10 months from now (assuming your very early in your UY). Holding points have the restriction that your can only book available nights 60 days or less prior to check in. And still in the UY of course.

Holding points can only be used to book an upcoming stay that is less than 60 days away.
Okay THAT is what I was missing. The 60 days restriction. Oh well, it was only one night's worth of points. We should have no problem using it within the restriction.

Thanks!
