Hi,

I am planning a trip for our family (including cousins and in laws). In all we have 9 people. I started making reservations today for the Christmas holiday. 7 of us are in for sure. We have reservations and have purchased non refundable airfare.

2 of the people are "play it by ear" type. In the end I think they will go but you can never be positive until a month or so before.

I made ADR's for 9. If I need to cancel 2, do I have to cancel the entire reservation or just call and have 2 taken off. I assume it is much harder to add people than subtract.

I would keep all your ADRs for the maximum number of people, and then call to adjust the number when you know for sure. This is something I would call for, I would not chance cancelling and rebooking on my own on the online system, for fear that the whole thing might be lost. The new website still has some issues to be worked out. ;)

They are not going to make you cancel and rebook any of them. This situation happen to us a few years ago. I called as a courtesy to let them know that two people were not going to eat with us. They said that they would amend the reservation but when we showed up they still showed the two extra people. I would honestly only call to cancel them if you have any reservations that had to be held with a credit card.

No need to cancel, just call and reduce the # of members in your party once you know FOR SURE that they aren't coming...maybe a couple of days before?

SOoooo many people try to add later, which, does require a cancel and rebook, but NOT in your case (taking # down).

Have a great holiday!

As the previous poster have mentioned, you can attempt to call dining and reduce as needed. This is possible, but not all dining CMs either know how, or can do it (some will offer to search for new reservations, which is what you DON'T want!)

Alternatively, at locations that are not prepaid in full (e.g. CRT, HDDR, etc), showing up with less than the booked number is not going to hurt either. Even for cc-holds (excluding those prepaid-in-full ones), you will not be charged for missing party members as long as someone shows up for the meal.

It is a courtesy thing to call ahead of time, but be sure that they're modifying your existing one and not attempting to rebook. It's a big difference :).
